Bunt Defense

Play 1

  1. All infielders, pitcher, and catcher communicate the play number
  2. Runner is on first base
  3. Goal is to get an out
  4. 3rd Baseman is charging – Covers 3rd baseline side
  5. Pitcher covers 1st baseline side
  6. Shortstop covers 2nd base
  7. 2nd Baseman backs up first – Covers first base if 1st Baseman has to charge the hard bunt at him
  8. 1st Baseman checks for the hard bunt at him, then covers first base if he doesn’t have to field the bunt
  9. Catcher charges bunt, if he doesn’t field it he is communicating which base to throw to
  10. Pitcher/3rd Baseman/Catcher need to cover 3rd Base if they do not field the baseball
  11. Left Fielder is charging to back up 3rd Base
  12. Center Fielder is charging to back up 2nd Base
  13. Right Fielder is charging to back up 1st Base

Play 2

  1. All infielders, pitcher, and catcher communicate the play number
  2. Anytime runners are on first and second base
  3. Goal is to get the out at 3rd base, otherwise just get an out
  4. 3rd Baseman checks for hard bunt at him, then covers 3rd base
  5. Pitcher covers 3rd baseline side
  6. Shortstop covers 2nd base
  7. 2nd Baseman cheats a step or two towards first, he then covers 1st base on the bunt
  8. 1st Baseman is charging – Covers 3rd baseline side
  9. Catcher charges bunt, if he doesn’t field it he is communicating which base to throw to
  10. Left Fielder is charging to back up 3rd Base
  11. Center Fielder is charging to back up 2nd Base
  12. Right Fielder is charging to back up 1st Base

Play 3 (Wheel Play)

  1. All infielders, pitcher, and catcher communicate the play number
  2. With runner on 1st and 2nd base
  3. Goal is to get the out at 3rd base – No other option!
  4. Pitcher comes to his set and checks runner at 2nd base
  5. Shortstop fakes pick at second base and runs in front of runner to 3rd base to cover 3rd base
  6. When shortstop clears the runner, pitcher looks back at home plate and counts to two and then delivers the pitch
  7. 3rd baseman and 1st baseman charge to cover their baselines but not until the pitcher looks back towards the catcher (Otherwise the runner could possibly steal 3rd if he leaves too early)
  8. 2nd Baseman charges for 1st base to cover after the pitcher looks to home
  9. Catcher charges bunt, if he doesn’t field it he is communicating which base to throw to
  10. Left Fielder is charging to back up 3rd Base
  11. Center Fielder is charging to back up 2nd Base
  12. Right Fielder is charging to back up 1st Base

Play 3 with Glove Pump (Wheel Pick – Looks just like Wheel Play)

  1. All infielders, pitcher, and catcher communicate the play number
  2. With runner on 1st and 2nd base
  3. Goal is to pick runner at second base
  4. Pitcher comes to his set and checks runner at 2nd base
  5. Shortstop fakes pick at second base and runs in front of runner to 3rd base to cover 3rd base
  6. When shortstop clears the runner, pitcher looks back at home plate and counts to two and then picks to 2nd base
  7. 3rd baseman and 1st baseman charge to cover their baselines but not until the pitcher looks back towards the catcher (Otherwise the runner could possibly steal 3rd if he leaves too early)
  8. 2nd Baseman charges for 2nd base when the pitcher looks to home plate
  9. Left Fielder is charging to back up 3rd Base
  10. Center Fielder is charging to back up 2nd Base
  11. Right Fielder is charging to back up 1st Base
