Troy Singleton
Assemblyman Troy Singleton has devoted his life to public service in government, political, and policy posts at all levels. His rapid rise to the highest levels of management in the New Jersey Legislature and as an elected official is a testament to his widely praised talent for assessing, developing, and implementing legislative responses to major public policy challenges.
Troy graduated with a degree in business administration and finance from Rowan University. He began his career as Legislative Director for New Jersey Assemblymen Herb Conaway and Jack Conners in the district he would come to represent. He was honored to then serve as Deputy Executive Director of the New Jersey General Assembly Majority Office under the highly respected Assembly Speaker Joseph J. Roberts, Jr.
Troy later joined the Northeastern Regional Council of Carpenters, a progressive union representing over 30,000 politically active members working for New Jersey’s several thousand union contractors. There he led the creation and passage of the nation’s most comprehensive reform of worker misclassification in the construction industry, the rampant employer payroll fraud that costs government, insurers, and health care systems hundreds of millions of dollars in lost taxes, insurance fund payments, and uncovered care.
In 2011, he was elected to his first term in the New Jersey General Assembly, representing the 7th Legislative District. Troy serves on the Assembly Budget, Education and Commerce & Economic Development Committees. While working for individual legislators, when managing the NJ General Assembly Majority Office, during his tenure as Carpenters union labor management chief executive, and now as a State Assemblyman he has focused on issues, ideas, and initiatives that support hard working taxpayers and strong New Jersey communities.
During his first term in office Assemblyman Singleton has had more bills signed into law than any other legislator. Among them are proposals to upgrade our facilities of higher education to attract and retain the best and brightest in our State, a bill to establish the Helmets-to-Hardhats pilot program and help out-of-work former military personnel find jobs in the construction industry, and the creation of a Small Business Loan Program in the EDA to allow small businesses to be eligible for low interest rate loans to expand. His primary focus remains on job creation, economic development and the needs of New Jersey’s working families.
Additionally, Assemblyman Singleton has championed the rights of domestic violence victims through his proposal to establish a four-year pilot program for electronic monitoring of domestic violence offenders. Further, Troy has fought to stem the flow of illegal guns into our streets by his sponsorship of legislation to enhance penalties for illegal firearms offenses.
Along with this busy career, Troy is a devoted husband and father of three who has long included personal involvement in community and politics as essential components of his life. He is a past board member of Rowan University, the Boys & Girls Club of Camden County, the Garden States Arts Foundation, the Trenton Civilian Emergency Response Team, and a volunteer coach with the Pennsauken Youth Athletic Association. Troy has also served as a Commissioner on the New Jersey Turnpike Authority. He currently serves as a Commissioner on the Burlington County Bridge Commission, as Co-Chair of New Leaders Council New Jersey, and as a member of the Burlington County Democratic Committee, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc. (Kappa Upsilon Sigma Chapter), and the VFW Post #3020 Men’s Auxiliary.
Assemblyman Singleton has been named the 2013 Legislator of the Year by New Jersey AMVETS for his commitment to protecting our Veterans and also by the North Jersey Arts and Science Charter School network for his commitment to furthering our children’s education. He is also a past recipient of the New Jersey Association for Justice’s Presidential Award in 2012.
