SET UP YOUR CRATE and allow the puppy to become familiar with it. The puppy should have enough room to stand up, turn around and lie down comfortably. Use the divider if necessary to make the crate smaller.

CHOOSE A SPOTas close to the entrance/exit of your home for your puppy’s designated “potty” spot. Having your puppy in the “right place” and rewarding him/her for using the “right place” as often as possible is the goal.

TAKE PUPPY OUTSIDE to the designated “potty spot” a few minutes after eating and then as often as possible throughout the day; every two to three hours, or more often if possible.

Wait about five minutes touching the spot and repeating “go here, go here.”

The puppy should be taken to the potty spot first thing in the morning, DO NOT wait until after you shower or make your coffee! Your puppy has been waiting and needs to be taken out as early as possible when you wake up.

REWARD THE PUPPY!

As soon as the puppy goes potty, reward with verbal praises, pats and a treat.

BACK TO THE CRATE

Whenever the puppy is not being supervised or you leave, the puppy should go back to the crate with safe chew toys.

OUTDOOR HOUSEBREAKING GUIDE:

REPETITION!

Take the puppy out every 2-3 hours or as frequent as you are able. The more often you are able to take the puppy out and reward, the quicker the puppy will be trained!

CONSISTENCY!

Always take the puppy to the SAME SPOT!!

PRAISE!

Reward your puppy with treats, praises and pats!

HINTS!!

Always bring your puppy to the same designated “potty spot” and wait about 5 minutes. Encourage and reward! If the puppy does not go to the bathroom, come back into the house and monitor the puppy for signs of circling and sniffing and go back outside!

Always remove the collar when the puppy goes back into the crate.

Never put wee wee pads or newspaper in or anywhere near the crate. Pads and paper encourage the puppy to go in the house. The goal is for the puppy NOT to go potty in the crate but to wait until it is outside!

Never let the puppy wander in the house without you supervising! If the puppy circles or sniffs take him/her outside.

The more often you take the puppy outside and reward him the faster he will be trained!

Gradually give the puppy more and more freedom when he is consistently waiting to be taken out to potty with no mistakes in the house or crate and not teething.

Crate and Divider: Puppies do not want to eliminate where they sleep but if they have enough room to go to the bathroom on one end and walk away they will do this and this will inhibit training.
