COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course discusses the Biblical teaching about the person and work of the Holy Spirit, both in Old Testament times and in the New Covenant era. Regarding the latter, it discusses the work of the Spirit before conversion, during conversion, and after conversion. Regarding the last of these, it discusses the sanctification process and spiritual gifts (miraculous and non-miraculous).
A. Purpose of the Course. Because of the vital role of the Spirit in the personal lives of Christians and the corporate life of the Church, and because of the widespread confusion and false teaching related thereto, it is essential that Christian workers understand the Biblical teaching about these matters. This course is thus designed to set forth in a systematic way what the Bible teaches about the person and work of the Holy Spirit.
B.Objectives of the Course. After taking this course --
1.The student should understand who the Holy Spirit is, how He worked in Old Testament times, how He worked in the Apostolic age of the Church, and how He has continued to work in the post-Apostolic era.
2.The student should understand the purpose and limitations of miraculous spiritual gifts since Pentecost.
3.The student should understand how the Holy Spirit has worked and is working in his or her own life, and should know how to take greater advantage of the gift of the indwelling Spirit for the purpose of living a deeper and fuller spiritual life.
C.Class Sessions. This course meets from January 23 through April 2, 2012, on Mondays, from 6:30 through 9:10 p.m. The student should bring to class (1) a Bible (NASB or ESV preferred but not required), and (2) a course outline (2007 edition), available on the Moodle website to registered students. Meals should not be eaten in the classroom.
D.Absence Policy. You are expected to attend all class sessions. When an absence is unavoidable, you should arrange to have someone record that session; and you should listen to the recording. If you must miss more than four hours of class, please consult with the professor.

G.Read & Report Assignments. For each book, write an evaluation that includes the following:
1.Three or four things about the book that were new to me or surprised me.
2.Three or four things about the book that disappointed me or that I disagree with.
3.Three or four things about the book that I still have questions about.
4.Three or four things about the book that will be useful to me in my life and ministry.
Write a good solid paragraph on each of these 12 to 16 items. Use an outline format: I.A., I.B., I.C., I.D., 2.A., etc. Include page numbers for citations from the book. Comment not just on specific sentences but also on general points of view about various subjects, and general conclusions.
