Title / Carry out pit lane, pit paddock, and/or service park operations at a motorsport event

Purpose / This unit standard is for people who work in a motorsport environment. People credited with this unit standard are able to: prepare for work at a motorsport event; follow pit lane, pit paddock, and/or service park safety requirements; conduct competition race vehicle service at the event; and conduct post-stop clean up.

1 Legislation and publications relevant to this unit standard include but are not limited to – Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act 1996, Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992, Resource Management Act 1991, MotorSport New Zealand regulations, New Zealand MotorSport Manual No. 33.

2 The MotorSport New Zealand regulations (motorsport regulations) and the New Zealand MotorSport Manual (motorsport manual) are available from the MotorSport New Zealand website http://www.motorsport.org.nz/. The Motorsport Manual is subject to frequent amendment, and any amendments will take precedence for assessment purposes, pending the review of this unit standard.

3 Definition

Company requirements refer to instructions to staff on policy and procedures which are documented in memo or manual format and are available in the workplace. These requirements include but are not limited to – company specifications and procedures, work instructions, manufacturer specifications, product quality specifications, and legislative requirements.

4 For this unit standard, it is essential that the practical assessment evidence is obtained in a motorsport team environment.

5 The NZ Motor Industry Training Organisation Inc acknowledges the assistance provided by the Australian Department of Education, Science and Training (DEST) in permitting their competency unit to be used as the basis for this unit standard. This unit standard is based on the unit of competency AURM3409A Perform pit lane/service area operations.

Outcomes and performance criteria

Outcome 1

Prepare for work at a motorsport event.

Performance criteria

1.1 Team instructions for working at a motorsport event are followed in accordance with company requirements and motorsport regulations.

Range communication, sponsor(s) requirements, behaviour.

1.2 Event regulations are followed in accordance with motorsport regulations and the motorsport manual.

1.3 Tools and equipment are checked, prepared, and positioned for safe and effective operation in accordance with company requirements.

1.4 Instructions and/or service area schedules given by the team leader are interpreted and confirmed in accordance with company requirements.

1.5 A whiteboard plan is made that itemises the procedures to follow, time limits, and event schedules.

Outcome 2

Follow pit lane, pit paddock, and/or service park safety requirements.

Performance criteria

2.1 Safe working practices are observed in accordance with legislative requirements and motorsport regulations.

Range personal safety and protection; adherence to event safety rules; safety considerations for competition race vehicle and/or components, trailer and/or support vehicles, machines, equipment; system isolation requirements (including barriers and warning notices to general public); worksite clear of obstacles.

2.2 Jacks, stands, and ramps used to support vehicles are checked for security prior to any work carried out in accordance with company requirements.

2.3 Fire precautions are observed in accordance with company and event requirements.

Range location of extinguishers, removal of fire hazards, storage of dangerous goods.

2.4 Pit lane, pit paddock, and/or service park signals are used in accordance with company requirements and motorsport regulations.

2.5 Unauthorised access of persons to pit or service lane areas is reported to the supervisor in accordance with company requirements and motorsport regulations.

Outcome 3

Conduct competition race vehicle service at the event.

Performance criteria

3.1 Work and/or service area schedules are carried out in accordance with instructions given by the team leader and to the whiteboard plan.

Range may include but is not limited to – minor repairs and adjustment, general preparation, emergency repairs, component replacement.

3.2 Work practices and pit lane, pit paddock, and/or service park procedures are modified to manage contingency issues on the instructions of the team leader and with due consideration of safety.

3.3 Service problems are reported to the team leader in accordance with company requirements.

Outcome 4

Conduct post-stop clean up.

Performance criteria

4.1 Tools and equipment are checked, prepared, and positioned for the next vehicle stop in accordance with company requirements.

4.2 Surplus components and materials are tagged and stored in their designated areas in accordance with company requirements.

4.3 The site is cleared of any obstructions; the working area cleaned of any spillage or waste; and waste is disposed of in accordance with event safety, legislative, and company requirements.

4.4 Work documentation is completed in accordance with company requirements.

This unit standard is expiring. Assessment against the standard must take place by the last date for assessment set out below.
