MIDDLE SCHOOL PERFORMING ARTS INSTITUTES
The Summer Middle School Institutes for THE PERFORMING ARTSoffers students unusual and unique experiences. The 3 Institutes will provide students an opportunity to do in-depth study and develop performance skills in specific areas related to theatre, musical theatre, and dance with more successful achievement in these arts.
Emphasis: Sessions will be comprised of activity-oriented training, research, discussion, individual work/projects, and group work/projects. A culminating activity will be presented on the various institutes’ last day. This culminating activity will give students an opportunity to showcase work in progress and completed work.
The High School Institute/Musical Theatre Production of GREASE!:
This Institute is only open to middle school students who will be in 9th Grade for the 2015-2016 school year. Auditions will be on May 8 and 9 at Blake. The institute will run from June 18th thru July 24th. Cost for students who attend those dates will be $600. Performances will be on July 18, 19, 20, and 21, as well as a special Portfolio Night presentation on July 24th. All show times are at 7:30 pm. The Sunday show is at 2 pm.
The Middle School Institute/ Musical Theatre Production:
This Institute is open to students who will be in grades 6 thru 9 in the 2015-2016 school year. Auditions will take place at Blake on May 8 and 9. The Institute will run from June 29 to July 26. Cost for students will be $600. Performance dates are July 25 and 26 at 7 pm. The Musical selection for this show will be based on student auditions. Currently, we are looking at the following show: THE WIZARD OF OZ.
Daily Schedule: for all Institutes will be from 9 am – 3 pm.
Eligibility: Students currently in grades 6 - 9 from any school, public or private, are eligible to participate in this program.
Attendance: Daily attendance is required. Students will not be readmitted to the program after a two-day absence unless pre-approved by our staff. Students whose summer job or vacation plans conflict in any way with the program may apply but must still pay the full price for the sessions.
Tuition: Tuition is $360.00 for the two-week Performing Arts institutes.
Tuition cost is $600 for the Middle School Musical Institute.
Tuition is $600 for the High School Institute (GREASE!)
Checks should be made payable to James Hubert Blake High School.
A session confirmation letter will be mailed on or before June 6th. Tuition is non-refundable after June 13th. Parents who need “Before” and “After” Care options must take note:
Before Care is $10 per day or $40 for a week/$80 for Two Weeks.
After Care is $20 per day or $80 for a week/$160 for Two Weeks.
Before Care begins at 7:30 am. After care ends at 5 pm.

The Staff for the Middle School Performing Arts Institute
Organization: The curriculum for the Institute is being planned by the professional staff at Blake High School. Here is information about them:Michael D’Anna has been directing theatre for over 40 years and has garnered a reputation as a director of outstanding plays and musicals. He has taken student work all over the world: England, Scotland Fringe Festival, New Zealand, and has been the teacher and mentor of professionals on Broadway, television and film including Michael Mayer: Broadway Director, and Chris Carmack, Hollywood Film and Television actor.
Harry Winter has been teaching vocal music for over three decade with expertise in the standard American repertoire. Mr. Winter continues to perform at the Signature Theatre where he has appeared in SUNSET BOULEVARD and THE WITCHES OF EASTWICK and was recently nominated for a Helen Hayes Award for his work in SHOW BOAT. He is one of the Metro Areas top teachers of vocal music.
Michael Kelley is a recent University of Maryland graduate with a degree in theatre. He has worked at several professional theatres in many capacities and recently performed at several professional theatres. He currently teaches at Blake and is the Assistant Stage Director and Director of the Blake Improv Theatre Company.
Rachel Lader is the head of the Blake Music Department who directs both instrumental and vocal music. She directs and sings outside of school. She is an accomplished vocal instructor.
John Ovington is a professional scenic designer who oversees our technical designs for our summer programs.
Other instructors will be added and posted on the Blake Website.
Medical Information
Parents will be asked to supply medical information for their son/daughter for our institute. Once you have registered, we will send you a medical form to complete and need that returned before sessions begin.

*Acting Training * Stage craft * Improv* Performance Projects *No Credit: Sessions offered through the Summer Institute are not for credit.
Enrollment: Enrollment in each session is limited. Applications will be taken on a first come, first served basis. . Sessions that do not meet the minimum enrollment requirement will be cancelled.
No classes for the July 4 Holiday.
