Listening Log Directions
The Big Idea:
- You will complete five listening logs throughout the rotation. These will be completed independently. Due dates and specific instructions will be given when appropriate.
- You will access the appropriatesong choices (located on my website)that corresponds with the appropriate Listening Log.For example Listening Log #1 corresponds with Listening Log #1 Song Choices.
3. You will complete the corresponding Listening Log worksheet handed out in class or
download it from my website.
Directions:
- Go to my KV website (KV Middle School/Teams/Creative Arts/General Music/Mrs. May) and click on the appropriate “Listening LogSong Choice”.
- Try to listen to short clips of different music selections before you make your decision. (The pieces of music found on this playlist, are some of the most beautiful and most famous pieces of music ever written!)
- Choose your piece, listen to it, and complete the questions located on your Listening Log Worksheet. Be sure to identify the title of the piece and the composer if asked.
- You MAY NOT listen to two pieces written by the same artist/band/composer. All Listening Logs need to be different.

HELPFUL HINTS
INSTRUMENTS: At first, it may be difficult to hear individual instruments, but try your best. You might find the following list helpful in identifying the instruments that you hear. I do not expect you to list every instrument in the orchestra. If a song is an orchestra arrangement, then just say “orchestra”.
WOODWINDS ----- FLUTE OBOE CLARINET BASSOON SAXOPHONE
BRASS ------TRUMPET TROMBONE FRENCH HORN TUBA
STRINGS ------VIOLIN VIOLA CELLO DOUBLE BASS GUITAR HARP
PERCUSSION -----TIMPANI TRIANGLE TAMBOURINE SHAKERS PIANO ORGAN
VOCALS ------SOPRANO ALTO TENOR BASS CHORUS
TEMPO/DYNAMICS –To find out the tempo(speed), walk to the beat of the song. For example, if you are walking pretty fast, the tempo is probably moderate to fast. The tempo may change, so make a note of it on your worksheet. Use your common sense with Dynamics – Loud or Soft.
SONG MEANING/INTERPRETATION; To find out the song meaning, you will need to interpret some lyrics. For help with this, you can search If your song does not have lyrics, then do a general search of the song for more information.
SONG/COMPOSER FACTS; You can search or for help with finding at least two facts or interesting stories behind the composer/artist/song that you have selected. I will NOT accept birth or death dates as facts. Be careful of saying things like “He was regarded as one of the most popular composers.” This is an opinion and not necessarily a fact. You may also find composer/artist/band websites or are helpfu
