Principal's Message

Dear Parents and Students,

Second semester here at LP is off to a great start. You will have received the semester one final report card Feb. 8th. Parents are encouraged to make sure that they review the final results and contact the school if there are any questions.

Checking the report card at this time is doubly important because students will have just completed option selection of courses for next year. While counselling staff routinely check that students are making good choices, parents getting involved by informing themselves about student course selection and progress is a way that you can assist your child with their IPP (Individual Pathway Plan). The My Blueprint link on our website (lpspartans.ca) is a great tool to help students plan out their educational pathway right to the end of grade 12, explore career options and investigate post-secondary programs as they design their secondary school programs. For more info on My Blueprint please go to our website, click on ‘Student Services – Course Selection’ – scroll to the middle of this page and click on ‘Getting Started Guide for Parents’. at a Glance 2016-2017.pdf

This year’s exam period represents the second time exams at LP will have run under the organization of one exam per day. This process schedules exams so that no student will write more than one exam on each of the 4 days of exams. We have responded to input from parents so that all of the exams are scheduled on 4 consecutive days so that no student writing

an exam in a multi section course will have any more time to prep than anyone else, where possible. We invite your feedback on the process.

Parents are also reminded that they can sign up for Parent Web. This on line application allows parents to check student attendance on line. Please contact the Main Office (ext. 400 for more details). Registration information is available on our website under the ‘Parents’ link.

We are working hard to provide more content electronically. If you are interested in receiving email notifications from the school I would encourage you to provide an email contact to the school. Email communication requires that we have your consent to communicate electronically. Consent can be provided through completing the application available at

Although the winter has been very mild this year the potential still exists that we could experience a weather event that would prompt the closure of schools. Please check the school’s website for information as to whether buses and or/the school are impacted weather.

Finally a reminder that April 11 has been added as a full day Professional Learning Day, in addition to May 13.

COOPERATIVE EDUCATION

Cooperative Education students are currently completing their term at their work placements across Peel. Students must spend a total of 15 weeks at their placement. They will learn valuable work-related skills, gain experience in an area of their interest, and earn high school credits. Students in the program have the chance to explore the world of work as they examine and evaluate their post-secondary career paths.

Many of our SHSM students completed the 2 credit Co-op component of their program in sports related job placements in businesses such as the Ontario Racquet Club, One Health Club and SWAT Health in Port Credit.

Another addition to our Co-op Program has been the Ministry of Education initiative known as DUAL CREDIT PROGRAMS which are aimed at helping students succeed in school and complete their diploma requirements. Students are permitted to take college or apprenticeship courses and use those credits for both their Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) and towards a post-secondary certificate. This term, Bradley Webster-Cho was presented with an Academic Achievement Certificate in Welding at Sheridan College.

Sheridan’s Skills Training Centre offers a variety of courses in the trades such as construction, plumbing and electrical. Their instructors are experts in their respective fields and the facility is very well equipped with the latest tools and technology.

If you have any questions about the Lorne Park Co-op Program , please drop by the Guidance and Career Education office and see Ms. Edmonds (or) visit the Lorne Park website or simply call 905-278-6177 Ext.415.

From GUIDANCE
Parents are encouraged to continue working with Lorne Park students on planning theirHigh School courses and exploring Post-Secondary options. Students may request timetable changes for semester 2 until Wednesday, February 10 and request changes for next year courses in mid-February. Parents are also encouraged to visit the Lorne Park website (lpspartans.ca), Quick Links - Study Tips to review ways to help further develop the learning skills required for academic success.

ATTN: VOLUNTEERS

Re: Annual Offence Declarations

All volunteers are required to submit a Criminal Record check prior to the commencement of volunteer duties. As a follow up to the Criminal Record Check, the Peel Board also requires an annual Offence Declaration form.

Offence Declaration forms will be mailed from the Peel Board to the home address of every active volunteer who submitted a Criminal Record Check with a police search date prior to August 1, 2015. Any volunteer who submitted a more current Criminal Record Check is exempt from this process. Forms should arrive in homes by February 19th. It is important that a completed and signed Offence Declaration form is submitted to the Peel Board, Attn: CRC, Human Resources, by March 31st. It is the responsibility of each volunteer to ensure that his/her Offence Declaration is submitted by this date to enable him/her to continue to volunteer next school year.

Volunteers who fail to provide an original, signed Offence Declaration form by March 31st will no longer be permitted to volunteer next school year. Should an individual wish to volunteer in future, a new Criminal Record Check will be required prior to the commencement of any volunteer duties.
