Online Book Stores
Not online, but a place to find local book sales. I love a chance to build my library!
I love getting my books from here! Chelly is great with personal recommendations as well, just fill out the Recommendations form. She also sends out some great newsletters.
Need I say more?
I really enjoy this site. It has great suggestions as well in the recommended reading area with newsletters. They also offer used books at good prices.
I have not really used this much, but I’ve heard it is good.
Online Barnes & Noble site.
Borders store (teamed with Amazon)
Or this page.
This is a club to join, but I love it. You build your own book list (I’m up to 43), then they send you one a month from your own list. You can even change the order. The best part is that all the books are only $9.95 including s&h! It’s a great price. And, if you want to order more you can, and the books are still only $9.95. The only drawback is that the selection, while good, doesn’t include everything you might want.
Award Winners
One of my favorite sources, the Man Booker Prize is given to any author of Britain and the Commonwealth countries. I like to look both at the long list and short list.
The Orange Prize is an annual prize for any woman with a novel written in English and published for the first time that year in the UK. The woman author can be of any nationality.
The National Book award page. Author’s are U.S. citizens and the book must be written in English.
A very complete source for all types of literature awards.
The Samuel Johnson non-fiction prize.
The Discover New Writer’s award page from Barnes and Noble. I like reading these and the equivalent Border’s awards.
The Border’s Original Voices award page.
Book Resouces
A most interesting site. You put in the name of an author and it creates a map with other authors that are similar. The closer the name is to the main author the more alike they are.
A source for free online books. I’m not crazy about reading online, but I know others have, and it is great as a reference tool as well. The majority would be considered classics.
I haven’t explored this site too much. I bookmarked it mainly because of the interview with Jasper Fforde.
Great site, not only for book ideas, but also for resources on books, especially if one is leading a discussion, and the book is available on this site. Free as far as I know.
Another resource for reading groups, or just finding interesting books. They do want a subscription fee of $35 for additional resources, but basic lists and information are available for free.
The Knopf Random House publishing page with resources of their books. A great collection.
Reading goup guides by Penguin books.
Main Random House publishing page with reading guides for their books.
A resource for other pages with reading guides, including from various publishers.
Book Lists
Historical Fiction list. Nicely set up by time period, subject and area of the world, along with approximate number of titles. Topics include wars, mysteries, humor, archaeology, and prehistoric fiction among many others.
The top 100 best English language novels from 1923 as compiled by Time magazine. This is complete with links to reviews for some and summaries.
I love to read books from authors of different countries and cultures. This is a great resource to learn more
Books with movies based on them. More interesting than I had at first thought, and some surprising ones! I’m sure most will agree that the book is most always better, but I’ve found some movies to standalone as very good, and it’s sometimes interesting to see characters brought to life.
