Sessions

1. Cooperative Ministry Leader: Rev. Jodie Smith

The future of the church is about co-operative ministry among churches. Co-operative ministry allows churches to do innovative and diverse ministry together than they could every do alone. Each church brings the gifts and strengths of its people to be in ministry together in the community. Rev. Smith is the senior pastor of the Redbank Valley United Methodist Ministry in the Franklin District, which is composed of 7 churches. She, along with lay members of the churches she serves, will talk about the structure, advantages and share experiences of co-operative ministry.

2. Gift of Healing Presence in our Faith Communities

Leader: Bonnie Harr, MSN, MS, RN, FCN

The Faith Community has a dynamic role in promoting health, healing and wholeness. Life together brings with it the opportunities for belonging, relating, forming, transforming and being fully present to one another in healing ministry. This session will not only, clarify the shared calling to become the hands and feet, eyes and ears, heart and mind of The Healer, Christ Jesus, but will also highlight the work of the Health and Wholeness Committee of the Annual Conference. We can face the future together wholly, holy, and as healers caring for one another.

3. Praying the Names of God Leader: Rev. Josephine Whitely-Fields

Praying the name of God is a fresh approach to prayer that explores the names of God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit, revealed in Scripture, and showing how to pray them on a daily basis. Time will be given to see and how God has related to the individuals in the study, through some of these names, making the experience personal. Clergy and laity are invited to attend.

4. Moving from Going to Church to Being the Church: The Church’s Role in the Antipoverty Movement Leader: Rev. Cyndi Bloise

This class will discuss theological reasons for congregations to add their ministries of mercy with minisries of justice in the area of poverty. In addition, we will discuss “Bridges Out of Poverty” and “Circles” as practical measures for increasing congregational effectiveness with our low-income brothers and sisters.

5. Volunteers Ramping Up – With More Ramps

Leader: Mrs. Diane Miller

Information and pictures will be shared about exciting outreach by volunteers in WPA Conference and beyond – from Boaz Fields to Kit Ministry and the Mission Barn to Sewing Ministry to Ramp Building. Stories will be shared from the WPA Early Response team on the devastation of Hurricane Sandy in New Jersey. Participants will be encouraged to become prayers, payers, or players with recovery teams which will work in New Jersey for the next few years. Participants in the breakout session will spend a little time putting together school kits.

6. Cultural Competencies Leader: Rev. Sharma Lewis

In this workshop, we will explore how to develop positive and strong working relationships when the Lead Pastor is different from the majority culture and/or when the Lead Pastor is a woman. Attention will be given to communication and practical skills in order to develop a culture of excellence and effectiveness. Rev. Sharma Lewis is a District Superintendent in North Georgia Conference.

7. What is Vision? Leader: Rev. Chris Whitehead

How does vision happen? Is there a simple formula to receive a vision from God? Warren Bennis writes, “Leadership is the capacity to translate vision into reality.” The word vision is found 102 times in the Bible. What exactly is vision? One of the best definitions I have heard was given by Andy Stanley, who said vision is “an image of what could be, fueled by a desire for what should be.” During this Helpshop, we will dive into this very important topic of how to cast vision.

8. Christian Education Leader: Rev. Tom Beagan

We will look at tangible ministry characteristics that help church’s student and children’s ministry to build young disciples. These characteristics are critical effective ministry with young people. Each participant will receive an evaluation tool to use in their local church setting.

9. Meat and Potatoes Leader: Rev. Bill Kemp

Church is simple. Church is a gathering of people for prayer, study, and worship, who relate to each other and to the world as Christ desires. Everything else is icing on the cake. Bill will present some new ideas on getting back to basics and listening to the plan God has for your church. Some of the presentation will come from the new plan for helping small churches become vital which is being developed by the Texas Annual Conference. Everyone signed up will receive a free copy of Bill Kemp’s new Reality Check 101 workbook

ABOUT THE KEYNOTE…

The keynote presentation will highlight where we have been as a local church within our area and where we are. While one cannot predict the future, the presentation will highlight key elements that are necessary for the Church to face the future with boldness and confidence. Our mission, vision and core value will be foundational for us as we face the future.
