The Chair of the Exam Board should ensure that all sections on the form are completed and signed by the Exam Board. The form should then be submitted to the Academic Office with 10 days of the viva voce. The Academic Quality Handbook contains the academic regulations relating to Research Degrees (Chapter 8)

SECTION 2 - EXTERNAL EXAMINER (1) REPORT ON THE THESIS

External Examiner (1) report on thesis - Please send this report to the Academic Office within one week prior to the viva. Examiners should not communicate directly between themselves prior to their independent reports being received by the Academic Office. If you have a concern about the thesis before the submission of the independent report, it should only be discussed with the Chair of the examining board through the Academic Office.

SECTION 5 – JOINT REPORT ON THE THESIS EXAMINATION

The examiners are asked to provide a joint report after the oral examination has concluded (approx. 1000 words). The examiners are required to set out their reasons for the recommendation. In the joint report examiners should explain in detail how the student’s work meets the requirements for originality and scholarship, or how it failed to do so. Full instructions must be included of any changes required to the thesis. The list of requirements should be submitted to the Academic Office who willthen send them to the student along with a copy of this report form.

SECTION 8 - EXAMINERS’ FORMAL RECOMMENDATION ON THE OUTCOME OF THE EXAMINATION - PhD by Research

The Examining Board, in recommending the student for the degree, has certified that the thesis submitted by the student substantially covers the scheme of research approved for him/her (AQH Chapter 8). B / That the student be approved for the degree of PhD by Research subject to the satisfactory completion of such corrections and amendments as may be required by the Examining Board. The Examining Board may stipulate that the corrections made shall be scrutinised by either or both examiners prior to the award process being initiated. Normally, corrections shall be completed within 6 months from the date of official notification to the student of the outcome of the examination; / ☐
C / That the student be not approved for the degree of PhD by Research at this stage but that the student is allowed to modify the thesis and re-submit it for examination for the degree of PhD by Research on one further occasion. The re-submission is to take place within a period not exceeding 1 year from the date of the official notification to the student of the outcome of the examination (this option is not available in the case of a student who has re-submitted a thesis for examination);
