Early arrivals, Airport pick up services and Accommodation arrangements
Volunteer wishes to arrive in Dar es Salaam earlier before the date of the camp, they will have to inform our office in advance by e-mail, fax or phone. We provide airport pick up service and also food and lodging at UVIKIUTA center for volunteers only. The following rates are applicable:-
  1. Transport from Airport to UVIKIUTA center or Dar city center: US$30
  2. Full board accommodation at UVIKIUTA Hostel: US$25(Bed, Breakfast and 2 meals)

Project description
Volunteers will join the community on construction of local health center project. The project is aiming at provide good heath care to women and children, who walk longer distance to find health care services. Activities will include brick making and construction of walls. There will technical personal from the community to work with the volunteers. If time and weather allows we might also plant some tree around the site to provide shed.
Educational activities
HIV/AIDS will be the focus of our discussion. Volunteers will have an opportunity to learn on the impact of HIV/AIDS in the development of education. Together we will work out to find what can be our role in making positive change. Couple of workshops will be organized together with study tours to visit various organization and institution s in the community. Please bring some information about the subject from your community for sharing. Educational activities will take place in the afternoons for 2-3 hours from 14.00hrs.
Cultural Exchange night
This activity will involve exhibitions, lectures, dances, singing, cultural games etc. Each country presented in the work camp will have maximum of 2 hours to make a presentation in one of the work camp nights. You might want to bring your national flag, print you national anthem for everybody to learn and sing with you, and bring some post cards, photos, traditional costumes, arts, crafts for cultural exhibitions. You might as well want to bring food recipes and ingredients. All depends on how you want you special cultural exchange night to look like.
Free time and Tourism activities
In order to socialize and get the understanding of the community, various free time activities will be organized like football match, gate together, cultural activities participate in various ceremonies etc. Bring some tools, equipments you think might help in this kind of activity. Over the week end will go swimming with Dolphin at KizimkaziBeach, tour to the Zanzibar’s historical sites, JozaniNational Park [Google Jozani for more information] and Eco/Spicy tour.
Food
Food will be provided by UVIKIUTA throughout the program and within the camp site. There is always Kitchen supervisor to manage kitchen activities and helping volunteers to prepare meals. You might have an interest to learn to cook Tanzanian food then this is an opportunity. Note that, the quality and quantity of food in our work camps is number one concern. Expect tasty food of good quality and quantity. Meals for vegetarians and people with special needs [health/ religious] will be available when we have information in advance.
Accommodation
We will stay in the house offered by the community members. There are 3 bed rooms, living room kitchen and wash rooms. Volunteers will share the rooms. There is running water and electricity. Make yourself flexibility to share room with others, men and women separate.
Public and social services
The project is located 15 from Zanzibar Stone town. Banking service like ATM, foreign exchange, post office and International call can be made in town where the public transport is very realizable.
Participation Fee
UVIKIUTA is a non –profit organization and does not have external funding. All costs of the camps are sustained through participation fees from volunteers. Therefore volunteers are expected to pay the participation fee of US$200 and orientation fee US$20 besides your personal costs needed to come to Tanzania (travel/vaccinations/etc. If you are doing two camps together the fee will be US$420
Transport cost
Meeting point to UVIKIUTA center [Orientation center] $10, Orientation center to the host community $40 Please note; the prices are estimates and can go up or down a little bit some times and is for one way.
Other cost to consider
Free time and tourism activities, medical expenses and pocket money should be covered by volunteers or their sponsoring organizations. UVIKIUTA does not pay salary or allowances to the volunteers.
Solidarity Pot
Solidarity pot is a new fund to support local Tanzanian from across the country to participate in the work camps. The fund is used to pay for their transport and other costs of the work camps. You can voluntarily support this fund by either contributing US$10 minimum no maximum or buying a CampT-Shirt @ $ 20 each or do both. Your support is highly appreciated by the young and disadvantaged people who can not afford to be part of this non formal educational program.
Means of Payment
For the amounts to be paid to UVIKIUTA including work camp fee is preferably to be paid in US$ cash or equivalent Tanzania shillings, €, UK£ using the arrival date, bank exchange rate. Kindly note that, we do not accept traveler cheques.
Refund Policy
Since work camp budgets are based on the number of registrations, there will be no refunds for cancellations after arrival. Please keep in mind that your registration holds a spot that could be filled by another volunteer, and a late cancellation prevent other people from being able to experience work camps and also brings a lot of inconveniences to the organization and the host community.
Donation to the people in need
You might have stuff you do need anymore or you might want to do collection in your community to support people in need. The opportunity is there. School items, books, kids’ toys, cloths etc can be useful to children in need, orphanages and people living in poverty in your hosting community. UVIKIUTA will not collect this instead you will personally handle over by yourself to the people during your stay in the community. Extra support in terms of finance or materials can be donated to the project directly while you are in the community. Please note; this is optional and you do not have to do it.
Things to bring with you
Before finalizing packing you stuff ready to join this camp, it is very important to include the following necessary items in your bag which will make your life here easy and comfortable.
  1. Valid Passport and Visa for your stay in Tanzania
  2. National Flag [We need this to put on the poll during the opening and closing ceremony]. You need it as well for your cultural exchange night.
  3. Bed sheet, towel and pillow if you need one. Clothes for rain and Mosquito net.
  4. Mosquito repellant, sun cream and other personal medications. Contact your doctor on what you may require in terms of medical.
  5. Cloth of cool summer, Torch, few nice clothes for parties, ceremonies and special occasions.
  6. Gloves and working clothes. Bring an extra glove pair for your friend.
  7. Camera if you would like to bring some good memories home.
  8. Note book, pen and diary if you need one.
  9. Music instruments, CD player, playing cards/various games, tapes, foot/basket, volley balls with nets etc to make you enjoying.
  10. Souvenirs and other stuff you might need for your cultural evening.
  11. Do not forget to bring team work spirit and smiling face.

Work campDiscipline
As a volunteer accepted in this International work camp, the expectation will be that you will make effort to observe the following important guideline so bring to bring the work camp to a successful point.
  1. To arrive on time and stay until the last day of the work camp.
  2. Respect the values of UVIKIUTA
  3. Actively participate in the work to bring it to a successful conclusion. The group organises the work with the aim of reaching an agreed goal.
  1. Participate in the collective life so as to encourage cultural exchanges, the group dynamic, and the circulation of ideas.
  2. Respect the costs of the work camp to the UVIKIUTA budget.
  3. Participate in the organisation of the leisure time while understanding that it doesn’t always have to be something paid for.
  4. Live in the work camp siteor other designated housing site. Not acceptable to have your own accommodation arrangement outside the camp.
  5. Our primarily task is to work with the host community. Volunteers have to be careful with their speech and actions to support this task. There will be many occasions when you will be working or eating side by side with locals. Please refrain from commenting about local politics or individuals in a way that could be the source of misunderstanding.
  6. We will have trained people to lead the projects. All the issues concerning the community should be referred to this person.
  7. It is important to all volunteers to maintain high standards of personal conduct. Foul language, promiscuous sexual activity, staying up beyond the announced and agreed curfew, and attitudes of hostility to local people are not acceptable and will be the basis of terminating an individual relationship with the work camp. Try to not to cause staff to have speak to you regarding your personal conduct.
  8. Before leaving your country, it’s necessary to take as much information as possible about Tanzania. Be careful with the information sources since you might be misinformed. Participation in an orientation/preparation seminars or sharing information with past volunteers/participants will be useful.
  9. You are going to join a group according to your willingness to participate. It’s basic to be motivated to learn and listen. Communicate a lot in order to create a familiar environment around you.
  10. By taking part in a work camp you declare your motivation to be a volunteer! Try to cooperate effectively with the other members of the group as well as with your camp leaders during working time. Follow the instructions that are given to you and ask for assistance any time you need… The coordination of all is going to bring the requested results for the local community as well as for you.
