Job Purpose

To provide support to schools and school communities in the development of physical activity and healthy eating initiatives that will encourage children to lead healthy active lifestyles.

Key Relationships

  • Internal: Team Energize, U5E, District Coordinators, Community Sport, Active and Well, Support Services
  • External: Primary and Intermediate Schools, Other providers in Health and Education sectors, Project Partners

Key Accountabilities

1.0Work with allocated schools to plan, support and implement initiatives that build a healthier school environment

  • Conduct a full school needs analysis annually or biannually
  • Develop an Energize action plan in conjunction with each school; tailoring the program to their individual needs
  • Develop or initiate activities, policies, procedures that will encourage an increase in physical activity and a healthy food environment
  • Meet regularly with schools to ensure the needs of the school are being met and revise action plan each term
  • Act as a catalyst for the Energize program

2.0Physical activity

  • Promote the benefits of a physically active lifestyle to teachers, children, parents and caregivers
  • Assist with implementation of school / home / community initiatives related to healthy active lifestyles
  • Facilitate support for teachers in daily exercise, physical education and sport initiatives. Deliver workshops for teachers or model ‘best practise’; enhance teacher’s skillsets
  • Coordinate outside presenters to assist schools where necessary
  • Coordinate with local secondary schools and recruit potential activity leaders to assist with activity sessions, events etc.

3.0Healthy eating

  • Act as a catalyst for creating a healthy school nutrition environment ensuring healthy and nutritious choices are available whenever and wherever food and drinks are offered to children
  • Provide easy to follow ideas using low cost products. Ensure these resources are available to schools and parents
  • Provide healthy eating education to students, teachers, and the community based on the New Zealand MOH guidelines
  • Assist, where relevant, with programmes such as edible gardens, breakfast clubs and Milk in Schools
  • Encourage schools to publish nutrition nuggets weekly and have healthy eating displays at school and community events

4.0Administration, operations and reporting.

  • Act in accordance with the Project Energize staff manual
  • Maintain close links and communication with team leaders
  • Update CRM database weekly and complete reporting each term
  • Provide an annual report of Energize support to schools’ Board of Trustees

Key Performance Indicators

  • Plans and reports completed accurately and on time
  • Schools increase or maintain the quantity and quality of daily fitness and physical activity
  • Schools make healthy eating changes; develop and/or maintain a healthy eating ethos
  • Initiatives offered/accepted by schools that demonstrate Energize messages through school l and into homes and community
  • Individual school action plan developed for each school in conjunction with the school

Person Specifications

The ideal candidate will possess the following attributes and skills:

Essential:

  • Qualifications and experience in an education setting
  • A working understanding of New Zealand schools and health promotion
  • Experience working with primary aged children
  • Excellent time management and organisational ability
  • A passion for healthy active lifestyles demonstrated by ‘walking the talk’
  • The ability to plan and deliver physical activity and nutrition sessions
  • A high level of initiative but also able to follow set guidelines meticulously
  • Has the ability to work both independently and unsupervised, but also able to contribute to teamwork
  • Can operate as a trouble shooter and problem solver
  • Can manage and develop effective relationships
  • Excellent communication skills and is a confident public speaker who is able to present to diverse groups
  • Current driver’s license
  • Lives locally

Desirable:

  • An understanding of the NZ curriculum
  • Experience using Microsoft programmes
  • Excellent written communication skills
  • Sound nutrition knowledge
  • An affinity with tikanga Maaori philosophy and approaches
