AP Language and Composition Current Event Article Review and Issues Colloquiums

Every other Friday (non-vocabulary quiz Fridays) you will write (type) a review of either a news article or television broadcast.

Sometimes the topics will be assigned, and sometimes we will work as a class to determine which issue will be the focus of each review.

Articles should have been published within six months of the time you review them.

Articles must have academic merit and significant weight.

Articles must be at least a full page in length, more if there are images and graphics.

Articles must be attached to the review; otherwise, the review will not be accepted.

Sources for Articles

You must review an article or program from a major news source (no blogs etc.)

You may review paper or online copies of articles.

Potential online sources include the following:

When given an option, articles should come from WORLD, U.S., POLITICS, CRIME, HEALTH, BUSINESS, or TECH section (not BEAUTY, ENTERTAINMENT, SPORTS, etc).

They need to deal with issues such aseducation, pop culture, media, technology, politics,

religion, gender, race, and/or family.

Instructions for Reviewing an Article or Broadcast

Each review should include the following sections (paragraphs), in this order:

Summary: Write a summary of your article in your own words. Be sure to use internal citation at the end of the paragraph.

Why it is relevant to me: Write why the article / broadcast is relevant to you. Use 2 specific examples/data to support your claim.

Why it is important to society: Write why the article / broadcast is important to society. Use 2 specific examples/data to support your claim.

My opinion on this issue:Write a well developed paragraph in which you respond to this issue. Consider the following questions, among others:

Do you agree or disagree with any opinions shared in the article? (claim/topic sentence)

Do you agree or disagree with the author’s approach in reporting this issue?

What do you see as the long-term impact of this issue?

Is there anyone in particular who is responsible for the issues addressed in this article?

How might we as a society address this issue?

Who in particular should be involved in addressing this issue?

For your argument paragraph you will need to include and use 2 other articles to provide evidence for your position. Attach all 3 articles to this assignment.No assignment will be accepted without the articles.
