Re:201814-1516-18 SW Trials and GIO Trophy Rugby League Competition

This memo is to outline the format for the 201818 Years Interschool Rugby League Competition (GIO Trophy). The 18 Years GIO Trophyis a national 18 years competition with the SW winner going on to play the Darling Downs winner in the regional play off.

In previous years, all pool and semi-final matches have been played on one day which doubled as a South West trial. At the end of 2016, a new format was devised which was developed in conjunction with feedback from school sport coordinators in the region. The overall aim of the new format is to improve player safety and allow greater opportunities for player/coach development. Thus, the newly formed GIO Trophy competition will be staged over a number of weeks with schools having the opportunity to play home and away matches. Unfortunately the draw for this competition cannot be confirmed until schools have expressed an interest in participating. But the round dates of the draft draw are as follows:

-Rd 1 – Week 6 (28/2/18)

-Rd 2 – Week 8 (14/3/18)

-Rd 3 – Week 10 (26/3/18)South West Trials

-Rd 4 – Week 2 (2/5/18) * If required

Communication from the NRL has stipulated that the conditions will be that if joining schools have less than 200 males combined across Years 11 and 12, they will be able to form a team. For example, the following could bethe participating teams for 2018:

-Miles SHS, Taroom SS, Tara SSC, Wandoan SS

-Charleville SHS, Mitchell SS, Cunnamulla SS

-St George SHS, Wallumbilla SS, Surat SS

-St John’s School, Injune SS

-Roma State College

-Chinchilla SHS

Along with the 16-18 years matches, students aged 14-15 willalso be involved in match playto gain game experience prior to 14-15 years regional trials These matches will be trials only and will not be part of an extended competition as there is no state or national interschool competition for U15’s.

The program outlined on the next page has been developed to provideschools and players with the opportunity to play several matches before contesting the next round of the 18 Years Competition and/or the State Championships (especially for the 15 years boys) if selected.
