Week 3

It is my dubious honour to start this week’s review with the saddest of news about the passing of one of our Life Members - Jack Tulley.

Jack was one of the longest standing members of the league having played since its creation in the early 1950’s at his one and only club in Mobberley. A winner of many league titles, Jack was always a capable player willing and able to spot a talent and bring them along.

A casual but important mentor not only for his successful son Bruce but also many other league winners including Tony Crompton, Mike Gittins, Bob Spilsbury and the likes.

Jack had a 28 break in the 2001-2 season to win the high break award and was a member of that season's Team KO Cup winning Mobberley B squad but retired from league snooker at the end of the 2006-7 season. Sunday lunch practice with his mates at the club became his staple until illness gradually took a hold on him and he passed away quietly visiting family in Blackpool last Thursday. A true gent, a great friend to many and our thoughts and condolences go out to his family.

To round matters off, the top two played with Shaw Heath A continuing their winning form with a 5-2 victory over Knutsford Cons A.

There was a small but significant piece of history created by Mere A this week – three generations of the same family appeared for the team. Grandad Geoff, son Richard and grandson Matthew Owen all played on the same team and whilst many teams and clubs have had two of the three generations, this is believed to be the first time all three have appeared on the same team sheet. It shows what a sociable and character building our sport is and can be.
