Module 4 Hand-In Assignments1/3

Module 4 Lesson 3 Hand-In Assignment

Description

This is a hand-in assignment. It includes questions related to the data collected for this investigation. Do all questions in Word. Organize your work as shown in the Exercise Answer Keys for both lessons.

Be sure to name your Word file with a clearly understandable title and include your name in the title. For example: m4_l3_assignment_ima_student.doc

Note

Calculations in Word can be shown as follows:

Slope = rise / run

Slope = (50 – 20) / (13 – 7)

Slope = 30 / 6

Slope = 5 / 1

Slope = 5

Method of Evaluation

Refer to the “Hand-In Assignment Rubric” noted in the Introduction to this module. Your teacher may use this rubric or one similar when marking your hand-in assignment.

Questions

The line of best fit is a graphical model of the relation between the circumference and the diameter of the circle. From this model, the slope of the line and the formula that relates the circumference to the diameter can be determined.

1. Use the selected points A and B to determine the slope of the line. Round your answer to two decimal places and how your calculations.

2.Complete the last column of the data table (round all calculations to two decimal places) and state the Average ratio.

3. How does this value of slope compare to the average ratio of circumference to diameter that you found in the table?

4. What is the meaning of “the value of slope” in this investigation?

5. Write the formula that relates the circumference, slope and diameter of a circle. Use the letters C for circumference and d’ for diameter.

6. Find the value of π by entering it in your calculator. How does the value of the slope you found compare to the value of π?

7. Use your graph to estimate the missing values in the following table of values. Use the grid provided to demonstrate how to find the values.

Diameter (mm) / 30 / (a)
Circumference (mm) / (b) / 120

8. Use your formula to calculate the missing values in the following table of values. Show your calculations.

Diameter (mm) / 30 / (a)
Circumference (mm) / (b) / 120

9. Did you find it easier to complete the table of values by interpolating and extrapolating, or from the formula? Explain.

Question

The rates charged by a taxi company are illustrated in the following graph.

1.State the independent and dependent variables.

2.Use the coordinates of the labeled point to calculate the slope of the line. (Include proper units)

3.State the meaning of this slope value.

4.State the fixed value for this linear relation.

5.Determine the formula that relates the charge (C) and the distance traveled (d).

6.Use the formula determined in part 4 to calculate the charges for the following trips:
a. 15 km
b.40 km
