ROUGH WATER CLINIC INFORMATION SHEET

DATE: ______TIME:______

You are signed up for the rough water clinic scheduled on the date listed above. If you can no longer attend, please call us at 415-332-1091 to cancel. If you cancel with less than seven days notice, there will be a cancellation fee of half the clinic cost.

Please arrive a few minutes early so we can start on time. We’ll begin with a discussion of tides and currents and technique, then go to the water to practice.

Preparation for the Rough Water Clinic

Be sure that you can row three nautical miles in about 45 minutes. An example of three nautical miles is the distance from the #6 channel marker to the end of Belvedere (1 NM), then turn and row down Richardson Bay to Strawberry Point (3NM). The roundtrip from our dock to the sewage treatment plant is 3.8NM.

If you cannot row this distance within 45 minutes, you should work on your technique and strength to improve your speed before you take the clinic.

Another requirement is that you have demonstrated the ability to right your shell and get back in after you’ve flipped out. If you haven’t yet had this experience, you can arrange to practice here in the marina near the dock sometime before the clinic.

The Day of the Rough Water Clinic

1. Be sure to eat a nutritious and filling (but not overly heavy) breakfast at least three hours prior to rowing. You will be rowing for two hours, covering at least six miles; this uses up a lot of energy. Bring a sports bar to eat during or just after the clinic to keep your energy up.

2. Drink at least one glass of water before you come here and bring a water bottle to carry during the clinic.

3. Sparingly tape any “hot Spots” on your fingers with surgical or sports tape if you are prone to getting blisters.

4. Dress in appropriate close fitting clothing -- no heavy cotton sweats. A polypro type top should at least be in the boat with you, if not on you.

Wear socks to protect your feet from being blistered from rubbing on the foot straps; wool or polypro or some other synthetic are good.

5. Remember sun block and sunglasses and a hat. If your hair is long, you might want to tie it back.

6. Bring a towel and change of clothes with you. You’ll most likely be wet when you return(even of you don’t fall in!)
