KS3 Graphics (Technical drawing)

Time allocation: 2 x 50 minutes - 1 hour session.

Context: FPT developing technical drawing skills..

Objective: Candidates develop their technical drawing skills so they can construct shapes to GCSE standard independently using suitable equipment and processes.

Starting point: Explain activities over 2 lessons. Anyone who gets full marks 40/40. Shall receive reward (we give head teachers merits) this activity builds confidence in the candidate that they can visualise and build shapes.

Great incite into gifted and talented and possible GCSE students.

Equipment needed:

A3 or A4 paper

Technical drawing table (if not available, highlight importance of base lines)

  • Board clips (only if technical drawing table available)

Compass.

Set squares.

Ruler.

Pencil.

Erasers.

Fine liners (highlight outline of shape)

N.C. programme of study achieved from the lesson:

2A, all pupils shall select the correct tools, equipment and understand the processes to build the square based pyramid using technical drawing equipment.

The F.P.T. is safe and 50 minutes to 1 hour is enough time to complete the task.

3B: (second lesson) Self assessment.

A lot of emphasis is currently being discussed and trial led in schools.

Self assessment: Allow the candidates to assess their own achievement.

…then, using the same assessment sheet, teacher assesses the work (I find it’s best to assess their work before them. Have your results in a sealed envelope)

What is useful about this exercise is finding out how the candidate feels about their own success. You will identify which children feel they are achieving the set standard, those with low self confidence, and those who think they are doing better than what they really are. By using the envelope, the candidates have full belief in the teachers assessment.

… It is quick, easy and the pupils will definitely know their achievement.

7B: This is a F.P.T. which does develop the candidate’s confidence in working independently and develops their knowledge and understanding of using technical drawing equipment.

Cross curricular Links: Maths.

Extension activities: this lesson can be developed nicely with C.A.D. Try getting the pupils to construct the shapes using 2D design. The emphasis is identifying the advantages and disadvantages of traditional hand skills V’s C.A.D.
