FEB 1 / 100 years ago today the American Red Cross Water Safety program launched! From training lifeguards to teaching lifesaving skills, today the American Red Cross celebrates 100 years of teaching the value of Water Safety in our region and nationwide. Last year, almost 18,000 people enrolled in Water Safety courses in Colorado and Wyoming alone. FEB 7 / Measles & Rubella Initiative launched (2002)
12 years ago today the Red Cross Measles & Rubella Initiative was launched! The Colorado Red Cross has contributed tens of thousands of dollars to support the Red Cross Measles Initiative, a program that has vaccinated more than one billion children against measles and rubella! For just one dollar, a vaccination can be administered to a child to protect him against these preventable, debilitating diseases. Measles & Rubella are considered rare in the United States today thanks to successful vaccination rates – but many people around the world still do not have access to the lifesaving vaccine that prevents these devastating diseases. 11 / 3 years ago today, a massive earthquake and tsunami hit Japan. Our hearts go out to those who lost loved ones and those whose lives were devastated by this disaster. Amidst this devastation, we are honored to say the American Red Cross mobilized almost 40,000 volunteers and provided over 75,000 medical services to survivors. 42 years ago today the first Everyday Hero award was given by the Colorado Red Cross to Colorado State Patrol District 1C for their incredible kindness and courage as first responders in the Adams region. This week is National Volunteer Week. Did you know that the Red Cross is a volunteer-led organization? Locally, it started in with a handful of dedicated volunteers in 1914, and today about 96% of its workforce is made up of volunteers. As tensions escalated towards WWII, the Red Cross counted 20,000 volunteers in Denver alone! Today, the Red Cross has about 2,000 dedicated volunteers in Colorado. / National Volunteer Week is here! Today marks 15 years since the Columbine High School shooting, although for most Coloradans this event still seems like it was just yesterday. When manmade disasters strike, Red Cross volunteers are behind the scenes providing comfort and support to affected families.
