ABSTRACT

Tetracarpidiumconophorum(African walnut) is an African plant with widely varied applications in Nigeria and Cameroun. The present study was carried out to quantitatively estimate the phytochemical present in different fractions (crude methanol, ethyl acetate, ethyl acetate methanol, ethyl acetate hexane, and hexane) of the methanol extract of Tetracarpidiumconophorumseed. Test for total phenol, total flavonoid, total proanthocyanidin and total tannins shows different types of results in different solvent. The amount of total phenol was significantly higher in the ethyl acetate hexane fraction compared to other fractions (P < 0.05), while the total flavonoid was significantly high in both the crude methanol extract of T conophorum and its fractions. Total tannin and proanthocyanidin content was also higher. The phytochemical composition of T. Conophorum contains high concentration of polyphenolic compounds and its antioxidant activity may be attributed to the presence of this valuable constituent. Thus, we concluded that T. conophorumcan serve as a source of natural plant phytochemicals.
