There have been lots of issues/discrepancies observed in the recently conducted recruitment process for Associate and Assistant Professors at NIFT. These discrepancies show lack of transparency and fair selection practices followed at NIFT, which need to be addressed and rectified to rebuild the faith in NIFT recruitment process.

Some of them are mentioned below, which need to be taken care at priority-

In few cases discrepancies have been observed, where the candidates have been cleared for the recruitment process where he is not eligible and even finally given appointment as Associate Professor and Assistant Professor.

  1. Mr. Bhaskar Banerjee,who applied from “J” category found eligible for Associate Professor, though he just have only 5 years of experience. He passed out from Master of Fashion Management (MFM) from NIFT, Delhi in 2007.

The eligibility criteria for the post of Associate Professor (Annexture-1 and Table A)clearly says(Min. 7 years experience after PG diploma/degree out of which at least 5 years must be at the level of Assistant professor and (or) equivalent to NIFT pay scales for the cadre),Mr. Banerjee has joined NIFT in 2010, so he has experience at Asst. Professor level at NIFT only 2 years.

Hence, Mr. Banerjee is not fulfilling any of the criteria, on what ground he got selected for Associate Professor Level?

He has done M.Com before MFM and taught in Kendriya Vidyalaya (Which is not a relevant experience at all for NIFT point of view) and adding to this, M.Com is not a category (from A to J), hence this experience can’t be counted.

As per rules, if one person is applying from J category, he/she should have the minimum work experience related requirement after PG Diploma in AMMM/MBA, which Mr. Banerjee doesn’t have.

  1. Mr. Aditya Upadhyay, who applied from “J” category found eligible for Assistant Professor, though he just have only 1 years of experience. He passed out from Master of Fashion Management (MFM) from NIFT, Gandhinagar in 2011.

The eligibility criteria for the post of Assistant Professor (Annexture-2 and Table B) clearly says(2 years PG Diploma / Degree – 2 years),Mr. Upadhyay has only 1 year experience.

Hence, Mr. Upadhyay is not fulfilling eligibility criteria, on what ground he got selected for Assistant Professor Level and given appointment at NIFT, Bhopal?

As per rules, if one person is applying from J category, he/she should have the minimum work experience related requirement after PG Diploma in AMMM/MBA, which Mr. Upadhyay doesn’t have.

  1. Why the list of shortlisted candidates for Assistant and Associate Professors recruitment process was not made public? As this was a huge inconvenience for candidate coming from different parts on India. They were called for the recruitment process (13th-20thJuly-2012) without any plan. This is a good example of bad planning. If the list of shortlisted candidates for the recruitment process had been published in advance, people might have planned it in a better way and could have saved both money as well as time.
  1. Why the marks of the written examination has not been made public. Even after one has not cleared the exam he/she has all the right to know about his/her performance, so that he/she can plan and prepare better for next time.

Eligibility requirements for post of Associate Professor

Persons possessing the following qualification and experience are eligible :

UG/PG Diploma/Degree in relevant area ( as per table “A” )from a recognized institute or University of national /international repute, with required years of relevant experience in teaching/ research/ industry of which at least 5 years must be at the level of Assistant professor and (or) equivalent to NIFT pay scales for the cadre.
Candidates with a Ph.D. degree in the relevant area will be given preference. All candidates who do not possess PhD degree shall be required to obtain the same within 5 years from the date of appointment. / Minimum relevant experience required:
4-years UG Diploma/degree – 10 years ( +1 year if its a 3-year UG degree/diploma)
2 years PG Diploma/degree – 7 years (+1 year if duration < 2 year)
Ph.D. degree – 3 years.
