Student Supply List
Layout; Design; Pattern-Making:
- Note book; sketchpad; pencils, etc.
- Manila file folders (for pattern-making; old, used ones are fine)
- Wide-nibbed indelible marker
- Fine-pointed indelible marker (e.g. laundry marker)
- Scissors
- Masking tape
Tools:
- Bring your own basic tool kit (saw; pliers; files; etc). Try to include the following items:
- Hammer(s) - Allcraft Tools in NYC now carries fully-dressedandpolished, ready-to-use forginghammers in three sizes: ‘light-weight’ (500 gram/1.1 lb. head); ‘medium-weight’ (1000 gram/2.2 lb. head); and ‘heavy-weight’ (1,500 gram/3.3 lb. head). All working surfaces have been ground smooth, and are polished bright. I recommend the 1000 gram hammer. PLACE ORDERS AS FAR IN ADVANCE AS POSSIBLE TO INSURE AVAILABILITY AND TIMELY DELIVERY! If you have your own raising, planishing or embossing hammers, please bring them also.
- Your own anvil and stand, if at all possible. If you have a small (35 - 50 lb) anvil, but need a stand, I have plans on my computer and am happy to email them to you. (Cliff Carroll sells a 35 lb. anvil with fully polished work surfaces for $166.00 - it's a great price and a beautiful anvil:
- Mallets - if you have a rawhide and/or rubber mallet, please bring them.
- Set of needle files (#0 or #2)
- Flat hand file (#0 or #2)
- Diagonal cutters
- Aviation snips (straight cut)
- Ring clamp
- Stainless steel ruler
Soldering/Heating Supplies:
- Solder: H, M, & E
- Stainless steel cross-lock soldering tweezers (insulated-grip)
- Fine-pointed tweezers
- Inexpensive, natural-bristle flux brush (plastic-bristles melt)
- Paste flux (e.g. 'Handy')
General Supplies:
- EARPLUGS!!! EARPLUGS!!! EARPLUGS!!! EARPLUGS!!! EARPLUGS!!! EARPLUGS!!!
- Pair of work gloves (cotton and/or leather-palmed)
- Abrasive paper (assorted grits: Coarse Medium and Fine -or- #320; #400 and #600 grit) -- most useful if wrapped around flat wooden sticks and secured with tape or rubber bands
- Brass hand brush (soft, uncrimped bristle)
Metal:
Choice of metal is up to you, but I recommend 24 gauge copper, sometimes called '16 ounce copper' (because 1 square foot weighs 16 ounces, or 1 lb). More = better, so try to anticipate your needs and bring what you can. I suggest several feet.
(Note): The 24 gauge copper sheet can often be procured from lumberyards or home improvement suppliers where it is sold as 'roof flashing'. It usually comes in widths from 6" to 12". If you purchase copper in this manner, plan on bringing several feet. Alternately, 24 gauge copper can be purchased from Allcraft or Metalliferous in 12" X 12" sheets
Useful Optionals: Bring If You Can:
- Flexible shaft; key; assorted burrs and accessories
- Safety glasses or goggles
- Clamp-on vise
- Optivisor
- Shop apron
- Small hand towel(s)
