Town Woodlots

The Selectmen briefly reviewed information given at the January 30th Meeting regarding the condition of Town owned woodlots. There was agreement among the Board that something needs to be done but it must be approached in a different manner than in the past.

Forester Steve Gettle reaffirmed that nothing should be done until the Town has a working Forest Management Plan. Once a plan is developed, a Maine Certified Forester can implement the plan and manage the work by inspecting both the timber and work sites on a weekly basis.

Ruth Marden agreed to contact the District Forester for Franklin County, Robert Leso to inquire into the procedure for establishing a Forest Management Plan for properties owned by the Town of Jay.

A decision was made to table until more information is available.

Boston Post Cane

Chairman Bill Harlow recognized resident Alice Cornelio for receiving the Boston Post Cane Award. Mrs. Cornelio was presented the Award by Selectmen Bill Harlow and Rick Simoneau at her 100th Birthday Celebration.

Two replica canes have been purchased from Peterborough New Hampshire, to be used in place of the original Boston Post Cane, which will remain with the Town of Jay. Several lapel pins have also been purchased to be given out to the recipients.

After some discussion, a decision was made to establish a Town Policy for the Award. Ruth Marden agreed to create a policy and present it to the Board for discussion at an upcoming meeting.

Other Business

Special Meeting:

The Special Selectmen’s Meeting scheduled for March 8th is cancelled.

Community Building Gymnasium:

Rick Simoneau discussed the Town’s “use” Policy regarding the Community Building Gymnasium. Mr. Simoneau has received several complaints from residents saying they’ve been denied use of the facility.

Mr. Simoneau agreed to contact Superintendent Bob Wall to get clarification on the current policy.

Spruce Mountain:

Rick Simoneau informed the Board that Spruce Mountain Ski Area is experiencing financial problems due to low ticket sales and little snowfall this year. The Spruce Mountain Board of Directors will be meeting soon to estimate the impact this will have on next year’s ski season. Spruce Mountain Board Member Rick Couture agreed to contact Rick Simoneau with the results of the meeting.

Mr. Simoneau asked the Selectmen to consider making a financial contribution to the Spruce Mountain Ski Area once the Board has an idea of the running costs for the 2006/2007 ski season.
