Information about the Highly Capable Program

To the parents of Snoqualmie Valley School District kindergarten students:

The 2014-15 school year will be a transitional year for the Highly Capable Program in the Snoqualmie Valley School District. By “transitional” we mean that some initial revisions will be implemented in this next year to meet the newly adopted WAC (Washington Administrative Code) amendments. The district will continue over the next several years to refine the continuum of service options for K-12 students.

Beginning in early December, all kindergarten students will be screened to determine those students who meet eligibility assessment criteria for Highly Capable programming. If you do not want your child screened for the Highly Capable Program (HCAP), please complete the Opt Out form for the CogAT screener linked here SVSD CogAT Opt Out, or in your school office. This form is due back to your school office prior to November 24th for kindergarten students.

Please note: For students residing in the Snoqualmie Valley School District, results from outside testing agencies will not be accepted for entry into the Highly Capable Program. Screening assessment results are not subject to appeal.

For Students Who Qualify for Second Level Testing

The Placement Committee will review students’ assessment results from second level testing to determine possible selection for the Highly Capable Program. Following the Placement Committee meeting in the spring, a letter with your student’s score report, which includes CogAT and ITBS scores, will be mailed home.

The letter will also include notification of your child’s eligibility status for admission into the Highly Capable Program for the 2014-2015 school year. Qualifying students will receive an invitation to participate in HCAP in this same mailing. Letters will arrive via US mail. Please do not contact this office or your school prior to receiving your student’s score report and eligibility letter which will arrive in the spring. The committee does not make final placement decisions prior to this time.

Retesting

All students in the Snoqualmie Valley School District will be retested in the spring of second grade for possible selection for the 3-5 Highly Capable Program.

Sincerely,

Dan Schlotfeldt
