ITP 119 Test: Tunnel Vision Interpreting in a Restaurant (live)

Imagine you are interpreting a restaurant menu for a Deaf-Blind Tunnel Vision client. Find a take-out menu or use one from the teacher’s file from any restaurant of your choosing and interpret it to your mock client (another student). Pay close attention to culturally respectful clothing, hand position, lighting etc.

Use your imagination and your acting skills as you interpet a "pretend" situation. for example, you could list the objective levels first like appetizers, soups, salads, entrees, drinks, & desserts etc. Just as in the Hearing world you would, obviously, never read through an entire menu line by line. Begin by asking if client would like to know the kinds of soup the restaurant is serving. If not, then move on to the next category on the menu i.e., salads.

You can accept answers from your client and move on to the next item. The last task will be mock ordering from the restaurant server. You can tell the Deaf-Blind person any information you want like the name of the restaurant, what the server is asking them, what other people in the restaurant are doing/wearing, general activity around you, and how the server responds.

Poor Example:

"We are at McDonald's. You want soup? No, ok, you want eat what? Oh, lady behind us is wearing blue jeans and yellow top. She has blond short length hair and blue eyes."

Ho hum!!

Good Example:
"We are here at Beppo, an italian restaurant. (talk to client), "I notice sign on wall that this restaurant, Beppo got 5 star ratings which means the food and service should be very good. Oh, the walls are dark wood and there are pictures full of famous people standing with, I think the owner of this restaurant. The restaurant seem pretty full, most tables have people seated.. I notice there are some rooms that are dark and some have more light. You want me to ask for seats in the room with more light? Ok I will request that. The man said there will be a 15 minutes wait, that ok with you?"...etc.

Your interaction should take about 3 minutes

Your assignment will be on Thursday, July 14
