ADVICE
HIGHLY FLAMMABLE MATERIALS (LIQUIDS/SOLIDS)andLPG
When storing the above materials, the amount should be kept to a minimum and only in suitable containers and stores, adequately separated from risks of ignition and other combustible materials. This is particularly important with highly flammable materials.
Storage should be in accordance with the HSE Guidance Documents HSG 51 for flammable liquids andHSE Information Sheet No:5 for LPGs.
Combustible materials, flammable liquids and gasses are generally NOT stored safely if:-
  • More than the permitted amount is being stored
  • Unapproved containers are being used
  • The empty containers are not segregated from full containers
  • The store is located too close to risks of ignition
  • The store is located too close to a boundary
  • The store is being used to keep materials other than the type it was designed to store safely
  • It is not possible to secure the store
  • The store is not suitable signed
  • The external store is not suitably ventilated
  • LPG cylinders are stored internally
Flammable materials are generally indicated with a flame symbol signage on the container or wrapping.
A maximum of 50 litres of highly flammable materials can be stored internally in suitable cabinets or bins providing they are at a safe distance from other flammable materials and risks of ignition.
