Orientation Highlights

This is a brief synopsis of the orientation sessions held on August 3rd and 4th. If you missed the orientation, please rest assured that it was not a mandatory event. Hopefully, this information will answer concerns you may have.

August 17th – First Day of Classes

All Sandhills Community College classes begin August 17th – for all students, including high school students enrolled through the Career and College Promise Program (CCP). If you only have a Tuesday/Thursday class, your class will begin on Tuesday, August 18th. If you have an online class, it is very important that you login and complete the first assignment within the first 1-3 days of the semester. If you do not, you risk being dropped from the class.

Moore County Schools Schedule Changes

Pinecrest and Union Pines students should contact the high school immediately for the dates to change a schedule or fix a conflict.

Textbooks

Pinecrest, Union Pines and North Moore juniors and seniors will receive textbooks during class on the first day of classes. Home school, private and out-of-county students must purchase their own text material (refer to the fall handout document for more information).

Attendance

Attendance is very important at Sandhills and is a little different than high school. Many departments allow no more than 3 absences and some may allow less, so please be sure to check your syllabus for each course you are registered for. Some absences result in decreased grades while others result in course withdrawal.

Calendar

Attached is a very important school calendar for high school students. The dates on the calendar may be different than the high school dates, but high school students are still expected to follow the SCC calendar. SCC may have different days off for Labor Day and Thanksgiving, so be sure to post this calendar in a place that will help you remain aware.

Transportation

Transportation will be handled by each individual school. Pinecrest students should contact Mr. Josh Newton and Union Pines/North Moore students should contact Ms. Stacy Patterson for information on how transportation will be handled. Please be aware that classes at Sandhills begin one week earlier than Moore County Schools.

Get Connected! Stay Connected!

This information sheet will guide you through setting up your SCC network account. It is necessary to do so in order to register for your parking permit, access your online classes, check your email and grades. There is an acceptable use policy that you must agree to prior to setting up your account.

SCC Email

All students receive a FREE email account. Please be sure to use this account when communicating with instructors and staff at Sandhills.

Parking Permits and ID’s

Student ID’s & parking permits are required for all SCC students. ID's & parking permits are obtained in the Dempsey Student Ctr. In order to receive a permit, you should register your vehicle online and plan to pick up your permit during the following days and times. You can pick up both your SCC ID and parking permit at the same time if you have registered your vehicle. In order to get your SCC ID, which is not the same as your high school id, you will need your SCC schedule and a photo ID (you can use your high school id). For dates and times outside of those listed below, contact the information desk in Dempsey Student Center.

Designated Student Parking Areas

If you plan to drive to Sandhills, please be sure to allow enough time to find a parking spot and get to class. There is enough parking for everyone, but the first few days of school will probably be challenging to new students. There are designated student parking areas across the campus. When you pick up your parking permit you will receive a brochure with a map identifying student parking lots.

CCP Student/Parent Handbook and Agreement Form

Contained within the handbook are college expectations for students, including student’s code of conduct, students responsibility and the roles of college and high school staff. This handbook is designed for both the CCP student and their parent/guardian. Parents should be aware that student records are covered by FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974) which prohibits the release of student information to other, including parents, without written and signed consent. These forms will need to reviewed, initialed and signed by both the student and parent. The completed forms are due to Mr. Josh Newton (Pinecrest students) or Ms. Stacy Patterson (Union Pines and North Moore students) before the end of this month (August).
