Installing Virtualbox and Linux

Requirements:

* 1 GB RAM

* 15 GB disk space

* Either a Linux CD (provided by school or self) or an ISO image of a Linux distribution.

Step 1: Download the latest Virtualbox from http://www.virtualbox.org

* If not installing from CD, download the latest ISO file of the Linux distribution of your choice

Step 2: Install Virtualbox. The program must be installed on an internal hard drive. Allow Virtualbox to install the network drivers.

Step 3: Create a virtual machine:

A. Click the NEW button (Figure 1)


B. Enter a name and select Linux as the Operating System. If using a distribution other than Ubuntu, change the version to the type of Linux distribution. (Figure 2)


C. For systems with at least 1 GB of RAM, use the default RAM settings of 384 MB for the virtual machine.

D. Use the default settings to create a new hard disk.

E. Use the default settings in the Create Hard Disk dialog.

F. Click finish.

Step 4: Set up the virtual machine

A. Right click the virtual machine and go to Settings (Figure 3)


To add networking capabilities between virtual machines and the host operating system:

Use (Figure 4) below the instructions for reference.

1: Select the network tab on the left

2: Select the Adapter 2 tab on the top

3: Select "Enable Network Adapter"

4: Set Attached To: "Host-Only Adapter"


The Host-Only Adapter has built in DHCP abilities in the IP ranges 192.168.56.101/24 to 192.168.56.254/24 for the virtual machines and 192.168.56.100/24 for the host operating system.

Step 5: Start your virtual machine

Now, Start your newly created virtual machine by double clicking on it. Since you are running your virtual machine for the very first time, it will ask you to select the boot media to install Ubuntu on the virtual machine. To select the installation media as an ISO file, click on the icon showed in figure 5 below:


The next window which will appear is shown in figure 6 below. Click add butteon to selec the path of your Ubuntu ISO image.


As shown in figure 7, Browse through folders and select the required ISO file. Click “Open” and then “Select”


Now the Ubuntu intsallation process will be started from the ISO file onto ypur virtual machine.
