Xplor Canada Expands On Education

Welcome to the Xplor Canada summer newsletter, keeping you up to date on Xplor Canada and our association. The past months Xplor Canada has been involved with multiple educational institutions by donating their time and money.

The College Ahuntsic, located in Montreal, is dedicated to training students in the print industry. Recently Xplor Canada funded two scholarships, the winners for Computer Graphics preprint (preprint for Infographics) was first year student,Maude Gauthier-Beaulieu,and second year student,Arisleidy Guevara Mejia. Xplor Canada has also contributed resources towards Xplor Ryerson, the first student chapter. Currently Xplor Ryerson members are partaking in summer internships at a variety of companies.

  • Xplor Ryerson member, Emily House is working for Friesens in the yearbook division as Sales Support. She is proofing digital files through Adobe Creative Suite and preparing them for submission.
  • Alex Downey-Ging is spending her internship at Webcom as an Estimator. She is responsible for pricing quotes and communicating with outside suppliers to determine if they are able to work with Webcom. She is also reviewing past quotes to determine the best suppliers for each job. She is enjoying her time there and trying to absorb as much information as possible.
  • Amy Nguyen is currently interning as a Web Developer. Her primary task is content management for the company’s online knowledge centre database. She is currently working with Coldfusion Markup Language. She has also had the opportunity to work with Adobe Muse and Adobe Dreamweaver to make revisions to the company’s website.
  • This past school year Xplor Ryerson participated in a tour at Symcor. Valerie Drozdowsky is now interning at Symcor as an Account Service Associate. An ASA is the day to day point of contact for external and internal clients in regards to any production related activities. One of the main projects Valerie is working on is revising the National Account Services Associate Training Manual. She is doing this by going from department to department to meet each manager and learning what their roles are and how they contribute to the day to day operations. Valerie is enjoying her time at Symcor.
  • Kyle Tavares from Ryerson University is currently interning at Xplor Canada under Paul Abdool. He is contributing by working on multiple projects to expand student chapters as well as creating events between Xplor Ryerson and Xplor Canada.
  • Xplor is working on creating a transactional document competition for all Xplor student chapters to participate in.

The goals for Xplor Ryerson this upcoming school year include member acquisition and continuing to be students of the industry. Xplor Ryerson will be coordinating a tour of a Canada Post facility this coming fall open to all Xplor members. Xplor Ryerson is also looking towards attending this year’s Graph Expo in Chicago at the McCormick Place. The Ryerson chapter is very optimistic about the upcoming year!

Central Chapter GTA – GOLF Afternoon – JULY 17th, 2014

Quickly approaching is the Annual Charity Golf Tournament for the Heart and Stroke Foundation. The Deerfield Golf Club in Oakville will host this year’s golf event on Thursday July 17th. The first tee time starts at 11:30am and wraps up with a buffet dinner.

Networking Event

On August 21st from 1pm until 5pm the Xplor Central Chapter will be having a networking event at the Thomas Lounge at Ryerson University. Topics for this event will cover financial documents and the new securities point of sale implementation.
