17th March 2011 – The Bribery Act 2010 and Employment Law Update

Join the West Wales branch for an evening with Rosa Fernandez, Senior Solicitor and Lousha Bryl, Solicitor, from Hugh James, who will update us on the Bribery Act 2010 and Employment Law.

Registration for this event will commence at 17:15 with the event starting at 18:00, and finishing at approximately 20:30. Light refreshments will be available and both members and non-members are welcome to attend. Rosa Fernandez is a senior solicitor with Hugh James and her areas of expertise are employment law and industrial relations. She is a Member of the Employment Lawyer’s Association and the Industrial Law Society and was nominated for Welsh Woman of the Year 2007 as well as being a finalist in the Business and Management Achievement category.

Rosa has experience of advising on all aspects of employment law and industrial relations, including redundancies, business reorganisations, outsourcing and industrial disputes. She has acted for public and private sector clients including household names, national and international companies and SME’s and has liaised and negotiated with ACAS and various trade unions. Rosa worked on the reported case of Graham & Others v Glendale Managed Services (2003) Court of Appeal and has reviewed DTI consultation papers, providing views in forthcoming employment legislation.

Lousha Bryl is a solicitor with Hugh James and her area of expertise is employment law. She has worked with both public and private sector in drafting various contracts, service agreements, compromise agreements and staff handbooks as well as reviewing and amending policies of a public sector client with a view to reducing number whilst maintaining consistency, clarity and compliance with current legislation. Lousha has also advised on the redundancy process, performance management process and implementing contractual changes.

Lousha also has experience in advising members of the Royal College of Nursing on a wide range of issues as well as assisting with the preparation for General Teaching Council for Wales Professional Conduct and Sustainability Committee hearings.

Guest speaker is Peter Howarth, Managing Director of SBV Ltd, a training and consultancy company specialising in Procurement, and CEO of the Society of Procurement Officers in Local Government (SOPO).

Peter Howarth’s Profile

Peter has a long career record in procurement and local government. In October 2003 he started his own consultancy and training company (SBV Ltd) specialising in procurement and contracting matters primarily in the public sector. He is also the CEO of the Society of Procurement Officers (SOPO).

His previous posts include Director of Strategic Management, Associate Director of Resources and County Purchasing Officer for Suffolk County Council and Deputy County Supplies Officer with Shropshire CC

Advisor to the IDeA

He spent 15 years in engineering procurement with British Leyland in the Automotive division working on development projects for sports cars such as the TR7 and then for the Special Projects division

He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply a founding member of the Society of Purchasing Officers and the Central Buying Consortium (CBC). He is also a member of IPSERA, the IOD and the FSB. He is a visiting lecturer at Birmingham University

He was one of the first graduates from the Birmingham University MBA in Strategic Procurement programme and also has a degree in Applied Economics He also attended the Henley Management College post graduate General Management Programme

His role as CEO of the Society of Procurement Officers in Local Government (SOPO) involves him in working with 3500 members primarily in Local Government This role also involves substantial involvement with central government and other organisations that impact on the public procurement agenda and he is therefore aware of impending changes and available guidance that many others would not be aware of.

He also contributes regularly to magazines and national conferences on procurement and associated topics

He is totally committed to demonstrating that good procurement is one of the most important tools for any organisation’s success whatever sector they are in.
