Here’s a look at what’s coming up in our classroom. I’ve also included some questions you could ask your child about what he/she is learning in school. As always, if you have any questions, comments, and/or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me. ~Miss Laura White

SUBJECT SYNOPSIS / QUESTIONS YOU COULD ASK YOUR CHILD
Spelling: We’ve resumed the Reading Street spelling lists. This week’s skill is multisyllabic words. / What 6 syllable words can you say and spell?

Reading: We are going to start reading a short story called “When Marian Sang”. It is a biography that helps students understand that our determination can affect our ability to succeed.

/ How can your determination affect your ability to succeed?
Language: We are finishing our culture sections for the country report. So far, we’ve been able to add in details that are common in informational writing such as bolded words, italicized words, definitions, photos with captions, etc. / What words did you choose to define in your culture section? What photos have you/do you plan to include?
Math: A collaborative project was introduced today called “Plan a Party”. In teams, the students must plan and shop for party supplies/decorations/furniture all within a $1,000 budget including sales tax. Then, they must create a persuasive commercial to sell their party design. I am so excited to see the final products!  / What is the current sales tax in Massachusetts? How would you calculate the sales tax on an item that is $10 in price?
Science: The chapter 3 test is tomorrow. We’re currently working on a culminating project called What’s Quakin? in teams. The students need to plan, design, and build a 20 inch tall skyscraper that can stay standing during an earthquake we’ll simulate in class. Good luck to all the teams! / What did you learn from “Strip the City: San Francisco” and the design of the buildings in the city?
Social Studies: Today, we filled in the physical map of southwest Asia and Africa. The map test on this will be one week from today, Monday, May 22nd. / Name three rivers in Europe that were on the Physical Map of Europe test.
