SUPPORT OUR TROOPS

We all know how important it is to support our troops. One of the biggest factors affecting the success or failure of our courageous fighting men and women is that they feel the support from all of us at home! They must feel that we are all standing behind them, appreciating their efforts, and

that what they are doing is making a difference - that their cause is worth fighting for, and even dying for.

Cinco de Mayo is coming fast! Our May 8 annual fundraiser will be here before we know it. General Marci Jones has graciously stepped up and offered to be the official chairman of all! This means all of us will have to support her in the trenches of mailings, phone trees, food purchase and preparation, decoration, barbecue, kitchen help and the all so important clean up. Jan will be manning (or womaning) the sign-up roster, Larry the local Descanso logistics and René the “Carne Man”.

This is a great opportunity for all of us, both old and new members, to get to know each other, have fun and support “our troops”. I look forward to filling every spot on Jan’s sign-up sheet, from decorations to clean up, from ticket sales to making Nancy Shull’s famous rice, from bean pots to piñatas. The sign-up list will be available at the next meeting at the Barbour’s and anytime before or after. This is a chance for ALL of us, not just a select few, to have fun together supporting each other (and drinking margaritas in the kitchen).

We had a great St. Patrick’s day ride at Fiesta Island with eleven riders, corned beef and cabbage a la Marge and Jan, and Scott with his miscellaneous catches de pescado! Yay Sandy Angione, back in the saddle, and our new

member Monica. Susan is recovering well from her episode of “Stinky and the bottle rocket”

Cathy Till is putting together the Casper Wilderness camp out. Jodi and Benny are our new trail bosses. The Kirkwood’s are putting together the Heart Bar campout; Cathy and Wayne are putting together some rides and campouts for us. Terri and Marty are hosting rides and campouts for our enjoyment. The band “Barbwire” will be playing again for us at the carne asada dinner AND our upcoming Christmas party! Supporting our troops actually sounds rather fun, doesn’t it.

Your support will make a BIG difference.

Let’s ALL SUPPORT OUR TROOPS both at home and abroad!

See you ALL at the next meeting. AT THE BARBOUR’S - SHORTBRANCH SALOON

Potluck and hot barbecue at 6:00 + - Highway 79 in Descanso

MINUTES FOR PINE VALLEY MOUNTAIN RIDERS MEETING

MARCH 10, 2010

The meeting was called to order by our president, Bill O’Brien, at 7:25 P.M.

The minutes were read and some corrections made. The Hawi-Vallecito Park is part of the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park not Cuyamaca. The 5 houses on the Hemple Property could possibly, not will be, built if CRF doesn’t successfully purchase this property. Minutes approved with corrections.

OLD BUSINESS

Vern Whitaker Campout: The weather was great but some trails were washed out.

Vallecitos Event: Friday was windy, Saturday was nice, and rain on Sunday. There were 35 riders for the ribbon cutting. The ride Sunday was cancelled because of the slick trails. The Hawi-Vallecito Park is open for hiking, mountain biking and equestrians. Terry passed out maps and let us know 8 equestrian sites within the County Park at Vallecitos are going to be built.

NEW BUSINESS

Fiesta Island: March 14th. Riding will be on your own and lunch will be served at noon provided by Jan and Marge. Look for Jan’s motor home on the Bay side of the island.

April Meeting: We have been invited to the Barbour’s Short Branch Saloon for our April meeting. It is a potluck so we’ll start 6:00 P.M. There is a bar-b-que available.

Casper’s Campout: You need to call directly to get your reservations. There will be a wine tasting on Saturday night and champagne breakfast on Sunday. Call Cathy Till with questions.

Carne Asada Dinner: The price of dinner will be changed to $9.00 including water or a soft drink. Larry will chair the event and call a meeting soon. Peggy Martin suggested using the Google Calendar for signing up volunteers. Fliers and tickets will be out in the next 2 weeks.

CEA: There are new trial dates to stop the State from dismantling Los Caballos. The CEA is trying to get a Green Valley Falls Equestrian campground in return for no lawsuit. The Descanso/Merigan trailhead will have an expanded staging area, and Paso Picacho East will have an equestrian staging area. All these proposed sites are available for comment until early April. If you comment take out the words “permanent” and/ or “temporary”. Refer to the CEA website. The trail machine is not being used. Volunteers can’t use it except under park staff supervision. Write letters referencing this problem to Kathy Dice at the District Office, Anza-Borrego. Peggy Martin has her address. We need this machine used to build burms on sides of trails to stop further erosion. If you would like to join in a work party on the trails, contact Dave McClure at or call him at 619-328-6109.

Thank you Larry for chairing the Carne Asada Dinner and Jody and Benny for taking on the responsibility of trail boss!

Marci won the 50/50 for $11.00.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:30 P.M.

Respectfully submitted,

Susan Blackmon, Secretary

Caspers Campout April 16-18

Caspers Campout-make your own reservations-April 16-18. You can make reservations either by phone, or on the Internet.

There will be a potluck dinner Saturday night, and a campfire gathering both nights, (Is anyone interested in a wine tasting or martini tasting experience-if yes, let me know, and I'll gauge potential participation). If you have any other ideas, let me know.

"Caspers Wilderness Park" is an 8,000 acre protected wilderness preserve nestled among the river terraces and sandstone canyons of the western coastal Santa Ana Mountains. The park's many fertile valleys are overtly complemented by specimen groves of native Coastal Live Oak and magnificent stands of California Sycamore. These areas are further accentuated by seasonal wildflower displays and running streams. Wildlife is abundant and can be readily viewed from any of the parks numerous trails".--direct quote from the website.

The wildflowers may be excellent, though it is a bit late in the year-we've had so much rain, you never know!

Last year, when we went, there were shady spots (some folks called and made reservations over the phone, so they could talk to a live person about what kind of site they preferred) as well as sunny ones, but LOTS of oak trees. There are outhouse facilities near the corrals, and showers are about a 5-10 minute walk (or, bring your bike).

We saw deer, which is also fun, great views, challenging trails, easy trails...Caspers has it all.

There was water last year, and with all the rain, I would expect water is not a problem, but call ahead.

There will not be an organized group ride, so you can decide on your "mini-groups" and have some fun with new or old friends.

REMEMBER, THERE ARE NO DOGS ALLOWED IN THIS PARK, EVEN IF CONFINED TO CAMP AREA-they are VERY strict on this!
