JOB DESCRIPTION Outreach Support Coordinator

SALARY £23-25k pro rata depending on experience (working 3 days per week or 21 hours/week)

REPORTS TO Outreach SupportManager

PURPOSE

To enable people affected by spinal cord injury to realise their potential through leading Back Up’s relationships with Glasgow spinal cord injury centre and other hospitals in Scotland, coordinating all our activities with and within these centres, and providing a proactive telephone peer support service to people with spinal cord injury.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Outreach and wheelchair skills training in hospitals

  • Engagethe widest possible range of people with spinal cord injuryto sign up for further contact with Back Up, through organising and/or delivering wheelchair skills training sessions and talks for patients and families at Glasgow spinal cord injury centre and general hospitals across the UK, in line with Back Up’s Business Plan.
  • Coordinate, support and manage volunteer trainers, mentors and ambassadors who are helping to deliver sessions and talking to patients and families.
  • Lead, sustain and developstrong and effective working relationships with a wide range of health professionals and other charity representatives egthroughpresentations, calls and meetings, to ensure that people access seamless support.

Regular telephone contact with people affected by spinal cord injury

  • Maintain and support relationships with a large number of people affected by SCI (adults, children and young people and their parents) through regular proactive telephone contact.
  • Explore their feelings, wishes and needs and provide tailored peer support to help them:
  • feel supported
  • access relevant services from Back Up and elsewherethrough proactive referrals
  • become more aware of the possibilities of life after SCI

Other duties and responsibilities

  • Maintaining accurate records on the database
  • Work as a team, consulting with others to ensure you give and receive high quality support
  • Keep Back Up informed of the issues affecting the people you are supporting and of developments at the spinal cord injury centre & general hospitals
  • Input into team planning and activities
  • Manage the budget relating to activities at your designated spinal cord injury centre & general hospitals
  • Help recruit new volunteers as needed to ensure a diverse team representing Back Up
  • Other duties as required by the Outreach and Support Manager.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE /
  • GCSE level Maths and English A-C or equivalent

  • Experience of supporting people to adjust to a new situation and/or work towards goals
  • Experience of working with and supporting volunteers
  • Experience using a database

  • Able to quickly establish rapport and relationships with people. Excellent interpersonal skills in person and on the telephone
  • Compassionate and empathetic, able to listen, inspire and motivate people with spinal cord injury

  • Confident user of Word, Excel and Outlook

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

Outreach & Support Coordinator

Pay

•£23,000 - £25,000 pro rata per annum.

Holiday

•You are entitled to 22 days paid holiday per year (pro rata depending on days per week worked)plus bank and public holidays.

•The offices are closed between the Christmas and the New Year period and anydays which are not bank or public bank holidays will be given in addition to yourholiday entitlement.

Hours of work

•Your normal hours of work will between 9am and 5pm3 days per week, a total of 21 hours eachweek.

•Some flexibility of working hours may be required in accordance with the needs of the charity.

•Some flexibility in working hours may be negotiated to enable a betterwork/life balance or meet particular needs as required.

Pension

•Back Up has designated a stakeholder pension scheme that staff can join.

•Back Up will make a contribution of 2% plus a matching contribution of amaximum of 5% into this scheme or other agreed pension scheme aftersuccessful completion of the probation period.

Probation

•There will be a six month probation period.

Notice Period:

•One calendar month on either side, after a satisfactory six month probationaryperiod. During probation, notice will be one week either side.
