Art 1 Syllabus
As your art teacher, I want to give you all a warm welcome back to school! I am excited to meet all of you and work with you to develop your skills and creativity! The purpose of my Art 1 class is to provide you with materials that challenge your creativity and projects that strengthen your craftsmanship and skills. Art 1 will strengthen your ability to communicate and respond to the arts. The national art standards and common core standards call for students to develop their abilities in critical thinking, connecting, communicating, collaborating, presenting, responding, and creating. As a student new to the arts, you will have the opportunity to develop all these abilities during class, assuming you attend and participate.
Requirements
As a studio artist in my Art 1 class, you will have both work responsibilities and classroom responsibilities. You are liable for your work upon absences from class and will have until the end of the following assignment to make it up. Class materials are to remain in class, and you are welcome to come during directed studies to work on your project. As an artist in the studio, you are responsible for how you treat the equipment and materials provided for your assignments. If you misuse materials/equipment or disregard safety instructions, you will not be able to further use those materials and your project grade will therein suffer.
Evaluation
Most of your grades in Art 1 are going to be project grades. Your project grade for any assignment usually consists of notes, guided practice, sketches, and your artwork. Your grade for an assignment will be determined by your effort to complete your work to the best of your ability. You will also have daily participation grades, thus being in class regularly and on time is valuable to your grade.
Midterm: Perspective Project 50%, Midterm Exam 40%, Sketchbook 10%
Final: Large Scale Drawing 50%, Final Exam 40%, Sketchbook 10%
Materials
You might find that there are some materials you wish to bring from home. Bringing in your own materials can improve the craftsmanship of your work and is encouraged. You are responsible for your own materials and if you choose, you can leave them in my classroom. However, items left in the studio are often used by other students and can be misused or lost so keep this in mind.
There will be a $20 art fee for all students due the first few weeks of school. This fee is what will pay for all of your art supplies that are provided such as paper, paints, pencils, clay, etc.
