Recovery Art Project

Views and Illustrations of Serenity, Hope, and Recovery
Project Turnabout Art Procurement Project

PHILOSOPHY

To create and maintain an art program that stimulates an environment of “hope” and “human dignity” within our addiction treatment facilities.

Art is an essential part of human history and is a means of communicating ideas in our multicultural society.

Art experiences promote a visually literate society and a stronger understanding of oneself.

We see art as an integral part of Project Turnabout.

CONTEXT

Project Turnabout Centers for Addiction Recovery has operated since 1970 as a nonprofit organization. We focus on helping people who struggle with alcohol, drugs or gambling addictions find health and serenity in recovery. Recently we completed a building project that expanded our main campus in Granite Falls, MN. This allowed us to serve more people seeking treatment. The expansion has grown our organization to 122 beds and 78,000 sq. ft. We serveadult men and women in medical services and specialized treatment units. We also serve their families in our family education center. Lots of wall space surrounding and within the newly built areas offers a blank slate for displays of art.

THE IDEA

This opportunity gives root to an idea. What if we reached out to our recovery community; alumni, their families, and those who have a connection to Project Turnabout? What if we used them to fill this blank slate and help us put the finishing touches on our building project? We know that part of recovery for many is the ability to appreciate the beauty around us. Who better to capture an image of recovery than those who’ve endured struggle and now see the beauty that surrounds them?

OUR APPEAL

For this project, we invite images that convey joy in recovery: a sense of beauty, hope, or reflection. We invite original images that can quiet anxiety or lift the hearts of those on the journey. We ask that there are no images that glamourize or romanticize addiction. Today, many of us have access to quality cameras with capabilities to shoot high-resolution photos. Others have digital cameras or cell phone cameras with impressive photo-taking features. We’ve also seen through our addiction counseling work those who have impressive talent in drawing and painting. All of these mediums can be used to illustrate the journey and joy of the recovery experience. They can touch others with emotions of all sorts, and give rise to our vision that art has a place here to honor recovery and inspire patients, families, and visitors to Project Turnabout.

OTHER THOUGHTS

Project Turnabout’s Recovery Art Project is an ongoing process. Much like recovery, it’s a journey. In 2016 when we launched the Alumni Recovery Art Project, we considered that it would be our focus for one year. The response from the Alumni, Family, and Friends of Project Turnabout was so rewarding and well received that we decided to make the Recovery Art Project an ongoing creative appeal for art that tells a story of hope. Now, we’re excited to receive new works of art on an ongoing basis. Go ahead and get involved! Nothing could make us prouder than sharing images of recovery displayed in Project Turnabout spaces done by alumni and others who understand the work involved and the joy it brings. We welcome all new and returning artists to submit their art.

“Recovery is a personal journey. Art is a beautiful way to communicate a journey. Art as a language of recovery can bring people together.”

Project Turnabout Addiction Recovery Centers is excited to announce our “Beautiful Things Emerge from Hard Places” Recovery Art Project.

We invite original works of art in the form of photographs, sketches, drawings, or paintings that portray recovery from addiction to drugs, alcohol or gambling. Works depicting beauty, dignity, strength, or wellness, as well as those that elicit emotional connections with joy, peace, serenity, hope, and similar experiences are welcome. Our theme encourages illustrations of personal, uplifting and positive moments in one’s recovering journey and life, as opposed to the angst of pain and addiction.
