World Literature

Independent Reading Requirements

"You really ought to read more books. . . you know, those things that look like blocks but come apart on one side."

- F. Scott Fitzgerald

Books: All students are required to complete "outside" reading for this course. You may read any book that you have not read before. Being that this is a World Lit. course, the only requirement is that the book must explore another culture; this can be through the book's setting/themes or the author's heritage. Any time period is OK.

SSR (Sustained Silent Reading): Some Fridays class are set aside as time for SSR. In order to take full advantage of the reading time, you must have your book in class on Fridays and read silently without distracting others. Make a habit of taking time in your day to become a reader--turn off the TV or computer and pick up a good book. Most of all, ENJOY! (or at least fake it).

R & R (Record & Reflect): At the end of each week, you will record your reading in a notebook to track your progress as we did last semester (see back). Incomplete or hastily completed logs will deduct points from your SSR grade. These entries will be stamped each Monday and collected at the end of each quarter. Notebooks work nicely for this purpose. An entry should be completed for every twenty pages of reading (ex: 400 pages = 20 entries to be eligible for an A).

Book Talks: Toward the end of the semester, you may be called upon to verify your journal entries and page #'s by way of a personal book interview with me. I'll keep you posted on dates and such.

Grading: The number of pages you read and accurately record each quarter determines your independent reading grade.
