Applications will be presented to the committee and assessed as soon as possible. The committee meets every six weeks, and this is when applications are discussed, applicant will be informed shortly after.

Artist applications are assessed with reference to the following Application criteria.

An active commitment to their practice.

Clear intentions and ambitions for the future development and direction of their work.

An engagement with contemporary practice.

How work space at Cuckoo Farm Studios will benefit their practice.

That they will contribute to the studio Intellectually and/or socially.

A willingness to contribute to public events such as open studios; or the studios’ programme of education or community activities.

That they will contribute to the day-to-day running or management of the studios.

A desire to be part of a community of artists.

Studios will be allocated in order of acceptance, to suit the requirements of the applicant where possible.

Priority may be given to applicants where there are special requirements for a particular type of provision.

Appendix A

Cuckoo Farm Studios is an artist run organisation formed in 1992, in converted farm buildings on the northern outskirts of the historical town of Colchester.

Cuckoo Farm Studios is more than a provider of studio space for artists. It is a creative community of artists, studios holders and associates. Working across many creative disciplines that have the opportunity to interact with their peers, participate in collaborative projects and exhibitions, as well as pursue their own creative practice and development.

Cuckoo Farm Studios aims to be a significant local and regional creative centre, which values the artistic process above all else.

'Cuckoo Farm Studios primary purpose is to provide affordable studio space for artists and craftspeople. The purpose of the space is to provide a conducive working environment that gives the opportunity for interaction between studio holders, associates and other creative’s within the artistic community that will facilitate professional development and afford an enrichment of the cultural life of the region'.

How to get involved with Cuckoo Farm Studios from becoming a full time studio holder to being a friend and supporter.

Types of membership

Artist Tenant:

As a Cuckoo Farm Studios artist tenant, you will be given key access to the site and your individual studio, you will get a wide range of benefits and opportunities, including ENAS membership, opportunities to participate in Cuckoo Farm Studios events and exhibitions, access to resources including project space, workshop space, equipment and grounds at discounted rate. You will Participate in the Tenant assist scheme, be included in Colchester and Tendering Open Studios brochure. Participate in CFS AGM and tenant meetings and be able to vote and effect the future direction of Cuckoo Farm Studios.

Artists Associate (Including ENAS Membership). £50 per year

As a Cuckoo Farm Studios artist associate, you will get a wide range of benefits and opportunities, including ENAS membership, opportunities to participate in Cuckoo Farm Studios events and exhibitions, access to resources including project space, workshopspace, equipment and grounds at discounted rate. In effect you will get all the benefits of being a tenant without having a studio space. You will be able to participate Colchester and Tendering Open Studios at a discounted rate.

Artist Associates can join the studio waiting list at any time.

Application to become an Artist Associate is by selection and is assessed in the same way as a full tenant application.

Past tenants are also eligible for Artist associate membership and in some instances artist will be invited or nominated by the studio committee.


Affiliate Artist: ENAS membership only £25 per year

Application to become an Affiliate Artist is by selection only.

Applications are all carefully and respectfully considered by the Cuckoo Farm Studios committee.

Applicants must be practicing artists and show a dedication to their practice, at whatever career stage. Please visit the ENAS website to see benefits.

About ENAS

Essex Network of Artists’ Studios (ENAS) is a new support and development initiative for artists and studios across the county. ENAS is an initial two-year pilot programme (2014- 2016) funded by Essex County Council, firstsite and Arts Council England. With input from these organisations as well as consultation and support from eight ‘foundation’ studios, ENAS is a network for artists, for studios, for the public and for Essex.

For this annual fee, Affiliate Artists will benefit from:

- a range of artist talks and Networking opportunities

- opportunities to apply for ENAS funded commissions/ residencies

- opportunities to sell and exhibit work through ENAS events

- participation in ENAS Open Studios

- places on ENAS-funded or heavily subsidised research trips

- opportunities to attend CPD events (booked on a first-come basis)

- a fortnightly e-newsletter

- access to the membership blog and forums
