This master should be used by designers working on Port of Portland construction projects and by designers working for PDX tenants (“Tenants”). Usage notes highlight a few specific editing choices, however the entire section should be evaluated and edited to fit specific project needs.

SECTION 235523 – GAS-FIRED RADIANT HEATER

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1  DESCRIPTION

1.3  SUBMITTALS

  1. For systems, equipment, and components specified herein, submit product/material data; shop drawings; operation and maintenance data; as-constructed data; installation, startup, and testing manuals; operation and maintenance manuals; and as-constructed drawings.
  2. Shop Drawings: Include dimensioned drawings showing location of burners, reflectors, pipe inverts, height of pipe above floor, thermostats, hanger locations, and wiring diagram. Hanger locations shall be approved by the Port prior to fabrication. Drawings shall be approved by manufacturer of system. Show clearances to combustible material.
  3. Product Data: Include performance data.

Use only if Commissioning Section 019100 is included in the project manual.

  1. For systems, equipment, and components specified herein, submit commissioning plans and schedules; checkout, startup, operational, functional and final acceptance test plans, procedures, checklists, and reports; systems manuals; and operation and maintenance training plans.
  2. Include certification that the system is complete, adjusted, and operating satisfactorily.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.1  GAS FIRED RADIANT HEATER

  1. Acceptable Manufacturers: RobertsGordon Appliance Corp., Space-Ray, Detroit Radiant Products, Reznor, or equal.
  2. General:
  3. Furnish and install gas-fired, vented, infrared, radiant heaters, AGA certified and FM Global approved.
  4. Equip heaters with a direct sense silicon-carbide hot surface ignition control system with 100 percent shut-off ignition device.
  5. Equip the burner with totally enclosed motor with thermal overload protection, balance air rotor, combustion air proving safety switch, nickel plated burner cup, and combustion chamber with sight glass for visual inspection of igniter element and burner flame.
  6. Radiant tube shall be 16-gauge hot rolled steel, 4-inch diameter, aluminized steel for first 10 feet after burner.
  7. Reflector shall be aluminum, designed to reflect all radiant output below horizontal centerline of tube. Nickel plated hangers, chrome plated hardware.
  8. Controls shall include 3-try ignition module, interlock safety switch, 24-volt control transformer, fan relay, factory pre-wired.
  9. Provide stainless steel flexgas line and high pressure gas cock, all mounting hardware.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1  INSTALLATION

  1. Install systems, equipment, and components in accordance with applicable codes and regulations and the manufacturer’s instructions, diagrams, and prints.
  2. Clearances to combustible materials shall not exceed those specified by the manufacturer.
  3. Prior to installation, verify equipment locations and mounting height with all other shop equipment.
  4. Support Hangers, Anchors, and Seismic Restraints: Comply with the requirements of Sections 230529 and 230545.
  5. Pitch piping down at least 1/2inch per 20 feet on radiant lines.
  6. End Vent Assembly:
  7. Install in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.
  8. Install gas flue between heater tube and sidewall vent termination hood.
  9. Controls: Coordinate with work of Section 230900, Instrumentation and Controls for HVAC.
  10. Gas Piping: Make final connections to gas supply piping.

Choose one of the following two articles. Use Commissioning if Section 019100 is included in the project manual; otherwise use Testing.

3.2  COMMISSIONING

  1. Commission systems, equipment, and components specified herein.
  2. Installation checkout, startup, and operational testing shall be under the supervision of manufacturer’s representative who shall certify when installation is complete and system is adjusted and operating satisfactorily.

  1. Check out, start up, and test systems, equipment, and components specified herein.
