Mike Bowles Claims First COMP Cams® Memphis Street Stock Nationals
Mike Bowles from Memphis, Tennessee, took the lead early in the 25th lap of the COMP Cams® Memphis Street Stock Nationals and never looked back en route to his first title
Thirty-one Street Stocks, representing three states, entered the $1,500-to-win event at the historic, 1/4-mile Riverside International Speedway in West Memphis, Arkansas. It was Sprint Car ace, Jeff Swindell, who paced qualifying with the fastest lap around the oval to earn the Lunati Cams Fast Qualifier Award. Swindell then drew an invert of two cars for heat race action, and went on to win the first heat race to earn the pole position for the 25 lap feature with Bud Ward lined up to his outside.
At the drop of the green flag Swindell quickly bolted to the lead. Ward and third-starting Mike Bowles began to battle for the second position with Josh Ray and Jonathan Warnicke in tow. Swindell maintained the lead for the first eight laps as Bowles moved into the second spot and began to make up ground on the leader. The caution flag waved on lap ten for a spin, just as Bowles pulled even with Swindell for the lead. Under the caution Swindell ducked into the pits with a flat tire, which allowed Bowles to assume the top spot.
Once at the front of the pack, Bowles never looked back as he survived a trio of caution flags to motor away from the pack and claim over $2,000 in cash and contingency prizes. Josh Ray, Bud Ward, Hunter Wilbanks and Buck Scallorn rounded out the top five.
Jonathan Pierce claimed the Quarter Master® Hard Charger Award for advancing from his 20th starting position to a 6th place finish.
As the first retiree from the feature, Jeremy Dalton from Byhalia, Mississippi, received the Holley Carburetors Hard Luck Award after mechanical issues sidelined him.
