ConstitutionandmembershipofBoardofExaminers

According toMonash University (Academic Board) Regulations (regulation 16), theDean of the facultymust establish aBoard of Examiners(BoE), and appoint aChair (Chair of BoE). Theresponsibilities of theBoard areacademicand the compositionof BOEmust comprise primarily academicstaff.

Faculties may chooseto subdividetheir BoEintosections,asappropriatetotheir operational structuresand coursesoffered.

Examplesofsectionsinclude, but arenot limited to:

•By department/school:For afaculty with severaldepartments/schools,eachdepartment/school becomes asection with itsown chair and clearly defined responsibilities. In addition, thereisafaculty section toensureconsistency across sections, andwith responsibility for mattersthat donot belong to aparticular discipline. TheBoard isnormallychaired by thehead of department/schooland its membership comprisedof academicstaffwith teaching and/or coordinatingresponsibilities within the department/school(eg,chief examiners,year levelco-ordinators, etc)

•By courseor clusterof courses, each with asectionchair and clearly defined responsibilities.Board membership is normally comprised ofcoursemanagement committeemembersand relevant chief examiners.

Roles and responsibilitiesof Board ofExaminers

•Determinethefinal resultsfor each studentenrolled in unitstaughtbythefaculty,after considering the recommendationof thechief examinersof theunitsconcerned(Academic Board regulation 18)

•Award overall coursegrades,forrelevantcoursesmanaged bythefaculty.

•Amend final resultsintheeventof anerror (Academic Board Regulation 18)

•Monitor and reviewtheresults of unitstaughtbythefaculty(Academic Board regulation 16).Thisincludesconsidering reportsfromChief examinersof unitswith resultsoutsidethegradedistributionguidelinesapproved bythe Dean,andmaking recommendationson themattertorelevantChiefExaminers,and/or sections of BoE, and/or Dean (Unit AssessmentProcedures).

•Granting ofWI grades(Withdrawn Incomplete)for allunitstaughtbytheFaculty(Grading policyand procedures)

•Monitor interimgradesofall unitstaughtbythefaculty(Grading policyand procedures)

•Grantsupplementaryassessment,according toFacultyguidelines,tostudents enrolled in coursesleading toaqualificationownedbythefaculty(Academic Board Regulation 19)

•Monitorcompliancewith facultyand universitylegislation,policyand proceduresrelevanttoassessment.

•AdvisetheDeanon anymatter relating to assessment(Academic Board regulation 16).

•Maintain a record ofminutes of BoEmeetings.

When theBoEissubdivided intosections,theDean needs toclearlyand unambiguously identify which sectioncarrieseachof theaboveresponsibilities. In particular when awarding and/or amending astudent mark,itneedstobeclearand unambiguouswhohas theauthorityto doso.
