Les Directions
- Start with the PowerPoint Presentation of the directions. This is aimed at SEN + Lower ability pupils.
- A good kinaesthetic game is to put directions flashcards around the room. The teacher says the direction and the pupils work to that part of the class. An alternative is that pupils just stand and they step according to the direction given. They look as if they are dancing.
- Activity 1 – designed for SEN – fill in the directions on the compass.
- Activity 2 Speaking – this is an information gap exercise based on the map from the PowerPoint presentation. I ‘ve included it here so that the teacher can work with the pupils as information gaps can take a lot of explaining.
- Activity 3 Reading– this is a comprehension style exercise. Pupils look at the map and decide where the places are. For differentiation purpose those pupils of higher ability will answer in full sentences following the model. SEN pupils will write in the direction.
- Activity 4 Listening – a listening exercise, which is based on the map that is on the PowerPoint and in the above reading exercise. So for SEN pupils ensure each pupil has a copy of the map. For higher ability use the PowerPoint. The text has been recorded twice – once in the correct order and once mixed up. If the listening text is incorrect then the pupils write in the correct position according to the map. There is also a short match up exercise regarding the countries that surround France. See below for Master.
- Activity 5 Reading - to be used with map of France. Pupils write in the places on the grid according to the green map. Again give SEN pupils a copy of the map. Some of these can be a little tricky as the pupils have to follow the arrows carefully. The second exercise here is to put the names of the towns next to the compass direction. The names of towns are in the word bank below. There is another map of France where all the names of the towns have been blanked out. This is a nice plenary activity.
- Activity 6 equipe is based on the activities on page 63 of equipe. This activity is directed at more able pupils. Firstly pupils can fill in the grid saying where places are on the map. The second exercise follows the listening text, which can be found in the teacher’s notes. This exercise is aimed at more able pupils.
- Activity 7 – agence immoblier. This is a reading activity which combines the rooms in the house and compass directions. It works well with more able pupils. There is also a link to where you will find a small drag and drop property game, which would be a suitable plenary activity.
- Activity 8Work sheet is a quiz on the cultural aspects of France. It is a nice filler and/or cover style exercise. It’s in English.
- Assessment activities – there are two listening exercises – foundation and higher. Foundation exercise - pupils listen to the tape and decide if the compass direction is true or false. The order of the towns is jumbled up. Pupils refer to the green map of France used with worksheet 5. Higher – pupils complete the true or false exercise and also mention 2 further details. This exercise can wait as there are adjectives used. See below for Master.
