COURSE AIMS

With this accredited course, instructors will be able to teach Tai Chi Qigong Shibashi. The course will teach the 18 movements of Shibashi and also provide a thorough grounding in the philosophy of this type of exercise.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

1. Understand and perform Tai Chi Qigong Shibashi.
2. Understand the concepts of inclusion and diversity when teaching the movements.
3. Demonstrate an awareness of health and safety guidelines.
4. Understand the origins of Shibashi.
5. Understand the basic principles of Traditional Chinese medicine.
6. Understand the difference between callisthenic exercise and Tai Chi Qigong.

WHAT TOPICS/THEMES WILL BE COVERED?

·  Shibashi movements.
·  Abdominal breathing in relationship to Shibashi level 1 movements.
·  Body alignment, wuji, Tai Chi stance, concept of rooting via full and empty.
·  How to adapt movements for specific health and mobility problems.
·  Ways of teaching movements for inclusion of disability and reduced mobility.
·  The background and history of the movements and the theoretical purpose of Shibashi movements.
·  The concept and 4 principles of Yin & Yang
·  The meridian system and the concepts of qi.
·  The differences between Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and the allopathic view of the organs.
·  The difference between conventional exercise systems and Tai Chi Qigong Shibashi.
DO I NEED ANY PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE OR EXPERIENCE?
WHO IS THE COURSE SUITABLE FOR?

This course is suitable for

The L2 course is designed for those new to Tai Chi, Exercise Instructors or those working in health areas who do not hold an anatomy & physiology qualification.
The L3 course is designed for Personal Trainers/Health professionals or Exercise Instructors who hold an anatomy & physiology qualification. Evidence will be required.

A First Aid qualification and insurances are required before you begin teaching classes. CRB checks may also be required.

TEACHING AND LEARNING

This course is designed to allow learners to work at their own pace and mainly via distance learning. DVDs are provided for home study of the practical work. Theory will be delivered via distance learning with eLearning playing an important role. Learners will have access to their tutors via Skype, e- mail, phone and interactive online resources.
1. The induction session is carried out by Skype/phone/e-mail which includes an introduction to the course and the online classroom.
2. Written assignments are completed online and e- mailed to your tutor. All written work must be completed and signed off a minimum of 2 weeks before the final practical.
3. Learners are advised of dates of practical sessions that are set up in Somerset. We also encourage all candidates to set up Skype as this is an excellent way of communicating with your personal tutor. Corrections to your practical work can be also be carried out by your tutor using Skype.
4. The final practical assessment for the qualification is by observation or performance and can be arranged as a face – to–face session in Somerset or via a DVD recording of your practice.
5. You have a maximum of 1 year to complete this course in full.
For organisations who are sponsoring a group of volunteers – on site study and practical days can be organised by arrangement at an extra charge. Please ask for details.

For overseas candidates, final assessment is by a submitted DVD recording.

EXTRA STUDY AND PRACTICE

As this is primarily a distance learning course, learners are expected to study and practise at home.
HOW WILL MY PROGRESS BE ASSESSED?
HOW WILL MY TUTOR PROVIDE ME WITH FEEDBACK?
§  Your tutor will support and discuss your work with you on an individual basis – you will have access to your tutors via email, phone and the eLearning resources which will provide the opportunity for feedback.
§  Regular formative assessment will be provided through e-mail.
Assessment of the qualification at L2 is by observation of performance, 500 word essays on some of the theoretical aspects, group discussion, oral question and answer and short written accounts.
Assessment of the qualification at L3 is by observation of performance, 1,000 word essays on some of the theoretical aspects, group discussion, oral questions and answers and short written accounts.

BOOKS/MATERIALS/EQUIPMENT

A PC with broadband internet connection is necessary. Access at home, library or SS & L centres. (Please telephone to book a computer in advance)

WHAT DO I NEED TO TAKE TO THE FIRST SESSION?

Reading glasses if needed. Please bring or wear soft bottomed trainers, loose clothes
(exercise trousers and t-shirt) for any practical sessions.

REFUNDS
A seven day ‘cooling off’ period is applicable to all enrolments from the date of enrolment. We are unable to offer refunds after this point other than in exceptional circumstances, when an admin fee will be deducted from any refunds requested by you.
If the course is cancelled or confirmed as already full, you will receive a full refund of fees paid.
Refunds for any other reason will not be given.
If you are paying by direct debit you will still be expected to pay the fees in full, even if you decide to leave before the date the course is due to finish.
