Soy Sealant Restores Aged Structures

A soy-based sealant called Ag-Tite has been designed for use on the farm to fill cracks and openings in structures such as barns, poultry houses and hog pens. Decade-old buildings with the blemishes of old age can be restored to their former glory in single passes that will give rise to 1-2 inches of quick curing foam. Successive passes can be made after the application has cooled. The United Soybean Board (USB) and soybean checkoff are working to promote products utilizing the benefits of soy. Ag-Tite, developed by EDGE Inc., along with Biobased Systems, is one of those novel products.

Light Up the Room with Soy Candles

Over the years, a variety of ingredients have been used in candles, thanks to the Indiana Soybean Board (ISB), soy was first incorporated into candle-making in 1998. Since then, USB and the soybean checkoff have joined ISB and others to successfully promote the benefits of soy-based candles. Currently, soy candles make up approximately five to seven percent of the 2 billion dollar candle industry in the United States. Soy candles don't leave behind a sooty residue and burn up to fifty percent longer than traditional candles. Soy candles also have a lower melting point, which allows for superior scent dispersion at lower manufacturing costs. Along with these performance benefits, consumers are also supporting domestic agriculture when using soy candles.

Soy Hydraulic Fluid Gets the Job Done, Keeps Environment Clean

Leaky hydraulic equipment on the work-site is a common occurrence and over time can have a detrimental effect on the surrounding environment. Now, there is an alternative to petroleum-based hydraulic fluid. Several companies are now offering soy-based hydraulic fluids which perform just as well as their synthetic counterparts and in some cases have been shown to reduce maintenance costs. Renewable Lubricants, Inc. has received support from USB and the soybean checkoff in the past and manufactures Bio-Trans-Hydraulic, a universal tractor fluid that is an ultimately biodegradable, multi-grade lubricant that can be used in agricultural, industrial and construction equipment and has proven field performance.

Soy Roof Coating for a Rainy Day

An alternative to replacing a leaky roof can be found in ELMS 150, a USDA certified biobased roof coating providing efficient and cost effective protection from the elements. ELMS 150 can be applied in one application for various waterproofing applications over metal roofing assemblies, various single-ply membranes and aged PVC membranes, polyurethane foam and more where latent moisture or ponding water may exist. Product benefits include: low VOC levels, excellent UV resistance, stain, mildew and mold resistance and outstanding elongation properties with low permeability. ELMS 150 is a product of Green Products, LLC and has received support from USB and the soybean checkoff.

USB is made up of 64 farmer-directors who oversee the investments of the soybean checkoff on behalf of all U.S. soybean farmers. Checkoff funds are invested in the areas of animal utilization, human utilization, industrial utilization, industry relations, market access and supply. As stipulated in the Soybean Promotion, Research and Customer Information Act, USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service has oversight responsibilities for USB and the soybean checkoff.
