A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO HONOR AND RECOGNIZE HIS EXCELLENCY AMANI ABEID KARUME, PRESIDENT OF ZANZIBAR, FOR HIS PROGRESSIVE AND INSPIRED WORK IN HIS NATION, AND TO WELCOME HIM TO SOUTH CAROLINA AS HE SPEAKS AT THE COMMENCEMENT CEREMONIES AT SOUTH CAROLINA STATE UNIVERSITY ON MAY 9, 2008.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate are pleased to learn that President Amani Abeid Karume of Zanzibar will speak at South Carolina State University commencement ceremonies on May 9, 2008; and

Whereas, President Karume’s father, Abeid Amani Karume, was the leader of the freedom movement in Zanzibar in the middle of the last century and is considered the founding father of the nation of Zanzibar and later of Tanzania; and

Whereas, schooled in the freedom struggle by his father, President Karume became an elected member of the Zanzibar House of Representatives at the age of fortytwo and was appointed as a Cabinet Minister over trade, industry, and marketing; and

Whereas, during this time, he was nominated to be a member of the Tanzania Parliament, and in his second term as a representative in Zanzibar, he was appointed as Minister for Communications and Transport; and

Whereas, elected President of Zanzibar in 2000 and reelected in 2005 for another fiveyear term, he has engaged in economic and social development in his country by emphasizing education, health, and poverty reduction; and

Whereas, due to his deep concern for universal education in his country, President Karume serves as the Chancellor of the State University of Zanzibar and is an honorary fellow of the Institute of Engineers of Tanzania; and

Whereas, he has further strengthened the economy and infrastructure of Zanzibar by improving telecommunications and the transportation network of roads; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate are pleased to learn of this visit from the President of Zanzibar in order to speak at the commencement ceremonies at South Carolina State University, and they wish him continued success in his leadership of his native Zanzibar. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, honor and recognize His Excellency Amani Abeid Karume, President of Zanzibar, for his progressive work and inspired in his nation, and welcome him to South Carolina as he speaks at the commencement ceremonies at South Carolina State University on May 9, 2008.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to His Excellency Amani Abeid Karume, President of Zanzibar.
