Research Poster Past and Present: Science in the last 50 years Start date: 1/11/17 Due Date: 1/17/17

In preparation for Grandparent/Special Friend Day, I thought it would be interesting to take a look at scientific advances in the field of Physical Science, specifically "Chemistry" (example: pharmaceuticals, forensics, drug detection, environmental issues, etc.) to see where we have come over the past 50 years (i.e. 1967-2017). You will create a mini poster of your research illustrating the science that was around in 1967, a timeline of advancements over the past 50 years, and the scientific advancements that exist today 2017. For you research, you may choose to look at advances in science that either:

·  came to be within the past 50 years to fill a void

·  improved within the last 50 years to improve upon current technology

An example research topic may be: The Chicken Pox Vaccine which became widespread in the United States just over 10 years ago.

In order to successfully complete your research, you need to:

1. Find at least 3 pieces of evidence to support your topic. Evidence can include the necessity of the technology you are studying (Example Evidence: In the case of the chicken pox vaccine, this technology was necessary because over 80% of preschool age children contracted chicken pox. Next, you would talk about the negative impact of this disease.)

2. Give adequate background information on the technology (if applicable, meaning if it existed) back in 1967. If the technology didn't exist, then the evidence you suggest for item number one needs to support your topic choice and why advancements needed to happen. (In the case of the chicken pox vaccine, it did not exist in the United States in 1967, but many people were getting sick so this technology was very necessary.)

3. Create a timeline of the science that occurred based around solving this problem within the time range of 1967-2017.

4. Give adequate background information on the technology that exists today (2017) and what improvements this technology has made to the health of "The Human Body". It would be good to include a data table to show change (i.e. either a decrease in occurrence or and increase the number of live that are positively impacted).

In addition to being graded on the criteria list above, organization, labeling, grammar and punctuation, and creativity will be graded as well. One way in which learners may earn points in creativity would be to include a personal story about their topic. (Example: If I chose the Chicken Pox Vaccine as my topic, I may want to create a graph showing the number of people in my family who have contracted chicken pox over the past 50 years. My hope is that we would see that number decline thanks to this technology).
