Ohio Legislative Summit

Thursday, March 31 through Friday, April 1, 2016

Salt Fork State Park

Dear Parents/Guardians:

Your child/advanced English student has been invited to participate in an exciting enrichment opportunity for gifted students called Ohio Legislative Summit. This will be an overnight trip taking place on March 31-April 1, 2016. During these two days the students will travel by school bus to Salt Fork State Park, near Cambridge, Ohio, where they will compete with other talented and gifted students from other Ohio school districts.

While at the Ohio Legislative Summit, students will participate in a number of exciting events. They will present their own bills of law and debate on bills created by other teams in a mock simulation of the inner workings of the Ohio legislature. The students’ teams will each select a district to represent and will create a cultural display and a tourism project (commercial or website) for that district. Additionally, the students will have an opportunity to meet with current state representatives to ask questions. Students will get the chance to participate in different competitions based on current events, essay writing, Ohio geography, and Ohio history.

I have personally been involved as a director with this worthwhile program since 2007. I am excited to be able to take my own students as participants again this year. I realize this program is several months away, but the registration deadline is fast approaching. We must form teams of willing participants now as it will take several months to prepare. Students will be using class time to work on this project, even if they do not participate in the actual competition. For example, they will write their bills of law and persuasive speeches in class. However, time spent working on this project will also be expected to take place outside of class.

More information explaining the cost and rules of the upcoming Ohio Legislative Summit program will follow as time gets closer. The usual cost is approximately $135-$155 per student. This covers school bus transportation, cost of program fees, most meals, and lodging while at Salt Fork. The first deposits of $50 per student/chaperone will be due mid-December. At this time, there are no plans to fundraise.

If your child will not be attending this event, please let me know (via e-mail) as soon as possible.

Should you have any questions, or if you are interested in attending as a chaperone please feel free to contact me at . Also, please visit my website for pertinent information regarding this program: www.stcschools.com/mindyhusek.aspx. I will upload documents and links as needed.
