Role: Maintenance Worker / Region / Department: E&E Region
Reports to: Head Gardener / Pay Grade: 2
Location: Lothian Cluster (Newhailes, Preston Mill, Malleny House & Garden and Inveresk Garden) / Type of Contract: Permanent

JOB PURPOSE

To undertake general routine maintenance tasks around properties. Ensuring that the buildings, services, and environment are maintained and presented to the highest standard within the property planned maintenance regime.

Providing ad hoc repairs as and when required.

  • Undertaking the day-to-day maintenance across the property, and assisting to maintain the grounds to the standards set by the Head Gardener/Operations Manager.
  • To undertake ad-hoc minor maintenance/repair across the propertieswhich may include electrical, plumbing, joinery, painting.
  • Undertaking the day-to-day maintenance of specific plant at properties.
  • Assisting with the maintenance of tools and equipment as required.
  • Ensuring that all activities undertaken are compliant with the property’s Safe System of Work and Emergency Procedures.
  • Work with the properties team to prepare and implement a regular maintenance schedule for the Visitor Centre and other buildings on the property.
  • To provide emergency support for the ‘Duty Manager’ through understanding the operation of the property key systems e.g. Heating/lighting, Fire and security, Water and Sewage systems.
  • Maintenance and lubrication of the water powered mill, checking sluices and ensuring the smooth operation of the mill

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS, EXPERIENCE & KNOWLEDGE

Qualifications

Essential

  • Must be able to demonstrate sound relevant experience in general estate work, and where relevant certificates of competence to use (and carry out basic maintenance of) equipment and machinery.
  • Current driving license valid for driving in the UK;
  • Competence in off-road and winter driving, and use of trailers and ATVs.

This role does not require you to undertake a criminal records check.

Experience

Essential

  • Demonstrate experience across a wide range of maintenance/DIY tasks
  • Previous experience of being a key-holder;
  • Demonstrable high levels of interpersonal and communication skills and confidence in dealing with a wide range of staff, visitors and other stakeholders;
  • Competent user of Microsoft Office products, i.e. Word and Excel to record works undertaken
  • Ability to manage working time and tasks efficiently and effectively in an environment of changing priorities;
  • Driving License, valid for driving within the UK

DIMENSIONS AND SCOPE OF JOB

People Management

  • Not a line manager but will regularly liaise with and supervise contractors.
  • The post holder will report primarily to Head Gardener, but will liaise with property team members as appropriate.
  • Working closely with other property colleagues, and liaising with other Trust staff and volunteers as required
  • Regular interaction with members of the public of all ages and abilities.
  • The post will be required to support emergency cover on occasion.
  • The post will be required to supervise volunteers on occasion.
