Ethics of the Christian
I am reading a book titled “Walking in the Way.” It is a book that deals with the study of Christian Ethics. We learn that Christian Ethics is not just a way of study but it is a way to Live. This is the way it was for the first Christian community. The earliest disciples of Jesus were called people of “the way” even before they were called “Christians” (Acts 9:2). The metaphor, common in Greek and Hebrew Scriptures, was used frequently of the people who walked in “God’s way” or in the “way of the Lord.” Jesus presented Himself as ‘the way’ “I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me” (John 14:6). Also remember that Jesus once spoke of the broad way that leads to destruction and the narrow way (which would be Him) that leads to life (Matthew 7:13-14).
“The Way” refers both to the destination of the Journey and to the manner of travel. “To walk in ‘the way’ involves a moral style so intimately related to the destination itself that to wander from ‘the way’ is to miss the goal (a righteous life in a community faithful to God).” (Ibid., 22). So as we live as Christians we need to always remember that our Christian ethics include both belief and behavior. I believe that Christ said it best when He said “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:16). We don’t only learn how to look to the Father and Jesus but we demonstrate it through the way we live our Christian lives. Ernie
