A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE THE CLAFLIN UNIVERSITY ATHLETIC PROGRAM AS AN ATHLETIC POWERHOUSE IN THE EASTERN INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETIC CONFERENCE AND TO CONGRATULATE IT ON ITS BEING NAMED THE EASTERN INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETIC CONFERENCE’S BEST OVERALL PROGRAM.

Whereas, committed to the strength and furtherance of both intramural and intercollegiate athletic programming, Claflin University has dominated the Eastern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (EIAC); and

Whereas, pursuing new levels of excellence, the Claflin University Athletic Program has garnered state, regional, and national visibility in being voted the EIAC Best Overall Program for three consecutive years and earning the prestigious EIAC Commissioner’s Cup; and

Whereas, six Claflin coaches were voted EIAC Coach of the Year for their respective sport, including: Miriam WalkerSamuels for Womens Basketball; Ron Woodard for Mens Basketball; Hampton Jordan for Softball; Brian Newsome for Baseball; Vernell Capers for Volleyball; and Jeffery Hughes for Mens and Womens Track and Field; and

Whereas, five teams showed exceptional athletic prowess in earning regular season championships, including the Womens Basketball, Volleyball, and Softball teams and the Mens Basketball and Baseball teams; and

Whereas, the Mens and Womens Track and Field teams won both the 2005 EIAC Tournament Championship and the 2005 NAIA Region XIV Championship; and

Whereas, Claflin University athletics remain a symbol of pride and accomplishment for the Orangeburg community and the State of South Carolina as a whole. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognize the Claflin University Athletic Program as an athletic powerhouse in the Eastern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and congratulate it on its being named the Eastern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference’s Best Overall Program.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the players, coaches, and school officials of the Claflin University Athletic Program.
